Alloy Roof Stays

Been thinking about the fancy Griff/Chim alloy roof stays. Did try fitting a pair to my S2 and its thought that they could well have been the cause of the breakage of my targa hoop. This could be caused by the differing geometry between stays for the Griff/Chim and the S. So what to do about it, one suggestion was to dismantle the Grfii/Chim and re-machine them but I suspect that would be a very expensive approach.

So how about having some made to match the geometry of the S but looking similar to the Griff/Chim. I believe my local fabricator could do the job but I dont have the faintest idea of a price.

To get a price I need to borrow a Griff/Chim stay to provide a pattern, I already have a spare S stay to be matched. Does anyone have one I could borrow, condition immaterial.

Hi Norman, sounds like a good idea, with genuine stays fetching big money when available could be viable option ?

Anyway, don't really want to leave the Chim "stay less" but if you can't get hold of one happy to help out with photo's and measurements or even take car to your manufacturer (if reasonably local and open Saturday ideally).

Hi Norman,

This is a problem that has perplexed me for a while. The crappy black painted ones on my S3 seem quite solid just flaky and coroded. My plan over the winter (along with many other plans) was to remove them, cleam them down to bare metal and then find a metallic spray. Alternatively if you have the means nearby you could always get them chromed. Probably pricey though.

Have already done that dismantled the stays and had them shot blasted and powder coated in silver, then replaced rivits with stainless steel pan headed bolts with domed nuts and nylon washers to stop rattles. Will post some pics tomorrow/friday.

They do look MUCH better but not as good as the alloy ones

Hi Norm I have alloy roof stays on my v8s being alate modle they where fitted from new I can mesure them if it will help. but at this point in time I cannot remove them as its going for a new hood at the weekend.But at the end of October it will be off the road for the winter. Then I can remove one if you require one

Crikey, you really are a perfectionist. Would love to see how yours look currently though as that'e the way I think I will be going.

I have the standard black ones on my S2 and they are looking pretty tatty (currently matches the car but hopefully not going forward!) please let me know how you get on? Thought I'd register my interest as the more people that want them may bring the price down with your fabricator?

Hello Norman

I bought a pair of Chimaera roof struts off ebay for £120.
They fitted my S3 after drilling the rear bulkhead holes about
1 centimetre lower to accommodate slightly longer struts.

Certainly put an end to that annoying ear level rattling
and don't look to bad either.

Well I have a guide price and its expensive. The stays would have to be made from bar staock and they milled for externat shape and the mounting points etc.

Initial estimates £245 plus a bit for polishing a pair unless we can cen get 20 pairs ordered then the price would drop to about £200.

Are there ant takers at that price?

Any mileage in looking at a simpler design, eg a square or rectangular profile ?

Was your price for Stainless or Alloy ?
