Speedo Problem

When I bought my S2 (about a year ago now) the speedo's was knackered. This is mildy upsetting as I never quite know how fast I'm going. I know you can work it out from the rev counter reading but who wants to do that all the time???
Someone told me it might be the sender unit, so, about 6 months ago I took it up to Castle TVR and let them play with it. Replacing the sender unit did not cure the problem - in the end they gave up.
So I'm gonna turn the diagnosis over to you guys:
When the engine is running and the car is stationary it reads 0 (zero). When travelling along at say 40-50mph it reads 20mph. When going faster (like 80-90mph) it reads 50mph. As soon as I turn on the lights the reading drops right off.
What do you think? I'm not much good at electrics so pl. keep it simple!!

had more or less the same prob with my s3, assuming its the same setup on the s2 (2.9 engine)have a look at how the colour of the wires on the connector. traced my problem to the sender and bought a new one, however fitted it and it didnt work, after a lot of head scratching noticed that the wires were a different way on the connector. swapped the wiring and it worked fine
you can access the sender at the gearstick on the s3. yours may even b a wiring prob as it sounds a bit suspect that when u turn on your lights it doesnt work. there is a live feed to the speedo/sender from the ignition switch,may be also worth checking the earth, this is connected to the speedo body.

not to worry,drop the steering column, two 17mm bolts and you can see the back of the speedo. the earth should be on a spade near the top of the casing. there is a wiring diagram in the bible but the colour of the wires will probably differ. it gives you a good idea of where the wires should go though. its basically an earth, a live feed from the ignition and a signal wire. if you check for 12v.d.c and earth continuity between the sender wire and chassis then you can see what wire is what on your car. on mine the colours of the wires coming from the sender into the connecting plug did not match the other side of the plug,swapped them to match and it worked fine,

edited to say the initial problem was a shorting wire at the sender, caused the same simptoms as yours.

You don't need to remove the steering wheel to access the speedo on an S2. The cable is long so you can drop it down to expose the connectors easily (you may have to cut a cable tie or two) - I have played with them while moving before!
You should also check the connector next to the sender on the gearbox, if it is corroded you may get dodgy readings - a needle file is good for cleaning them. (this was the fault when I bought my S2).
