Putting the distributor back.
Discussion
Having put the engine up on its stand I carelessy took out the distributor and then later, whilst showing my lad how an internal combustion engine works, spun the crankshaft.
Of course now I'm thinking that when I put the dissy back it won't be in the right position in relation to the crankshaft; will it?
Presumably if I position the crank pulley mark to the guage on the block that will make number one cylinder at TDC, then I can turn the dissy round so that thecap is on cylinder 1 position and then mesh the gears.
Or is it simpler than that?

Would suggest search on here or Google for setting up timing. Do you have Steve Heath book or a Haynes manual for V6 Granada ?
With crank vernier lined up you could be firing number one cylinder OR number five.
when putting dizzy back in it will turn because of angle of gear teeth, so you kinda start in the wrong position and as it skews in hopefully ends up in right (or somewhere near) position.
Have fun

And bear in mind that the crankshaft goes round twice for every turn of the camshaft - so putting the crankshaft to TDC might mean No 1 cyclinder is on its firing stroke - or it might be no 5... you need to check which valves are opening and shutting. (ETA just noticed phillpot said that too...)
This photo shows how the rotor arm should point at the notch on the distributor body. Note that there are 3 notches - it should point at this one when it's set up. Before you put the distributor in, though, point the rotor at the middle notch, and as the gears mesh, the distributor shaft will turn and should end up in the right place.
Then you set up the ignition timing more precisely with a strobe etc, but this is the starting point.
