s1 timing gears
Discussion
Historically the Essex V6 had a full fibre gear (which was the one that gives the bad 'name' to them failing) then they had a metal gear with nylon teeth set, I have know 1 of these fail in 30 odd years that I have worked on the Essex engined TVR's (IMHO because of poor servicing the 2mm oil that fed the gear set meshing point was blocked) then later you have both steel and alloy after market gears...as recent as 3 months ago I bought NOS gears off of Ebay for the 2.8 engine, (granted, they were listed incorrectly and got sent back).
So OP.. IMHO the 2.8 that is in the TVR is not prone to failure, given that it is serviced properly, but IF I WAS to rebuild one I would be replacing the gear with NOS or aftermarket as an insurance policy.

When I had an engine rebuild on my 2.8i a few years ago I was strongly advised to have the timing gear changed.
The existing is only disposable nylon or plastic and I was offered either steel or alloy timing gear. Both of these will last forever, but the alloy is a lot quieter once it has bedded in, whereas the steel will always rattle.
Needless to say I had the alloy timing gear and after 20,000 miles I have had no problems and the engine runs brilliantly and is free revving up to 5500 and is just as quick as 2.9 Ss.
The people to go to, for Ford engine work and especially the V6s are Specialised Engines (www.specialisedengines)in Essex. They have been doing this work for years and have vast experience and can offer numerous levels of tune for your V6 and in the case of mine just getting it all balanced and working properly is the big difference.
Just give them a ring they are very helpful with plenty of advice.
good luck
