S1 Sump Removal Query...

Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice.. Can anyone tell me if the sump on the S1 (2.8) can be taken off the engine insitu or does the engine have to come out?

If its anything like the 2.9 engined cars it sits far too close to the chassis crossmember to be dropped with the engine in.

You can either take the engine out or chop the cross member and weld it back when you have finished. I spent weeks trying to get it off, then consulted my local garage who also does my MOT. He agreed it would be OK to chop the cross member and re-weld. Once the cross member is off, it is a very simple job getting the sump off and back on.
If you do chop the cross member:
1 leave a couple of inches stub at each end
2 cut at an angle so the section is easy to replace in the same position. The metal is very soft, so an ordinary hack saw will do the job.
3 drive very gingerly to the garage to get it re-welded
