Hi all, does anyone know how to obtain the correct bearing for the stearing bulkhead assembly? My one is oozing rusticals and in need of dire replacment. Have chased every bearing supplier in the known universe but can only find a 9mm thick one instead of the 12mm as used. I can turn up a 3 mm blank but would rather fit correct part

The bearing is a 6005 so something like a 6005 2RS (very common on fleabay) should do. They are 12mm thick and fit the original holder.

Many thanks chaps, Have noticed hairline cracks in the plastic caseing on my one, so have purchased a new complet kit from tvrspares for 25.50+the dreaded, postage is free. Brilliant should arrive tomorrow. Have made a rubber gasket to go over the outerside to keep the water out of the bearing, I can pack it with grease so should preserve the bearing. Sheilded bearings are only designed to keep dust and grit out, not water so wonder why they never shielded it in the first place.

Good choice, the replacement outer section ofthe 3 parts that I got from TVR Car Parts was much better than the original, you can then just replace the inner bearing and plastic bush with cheaper fleabay items later if and when (as the inner bit is just flimsy plastic) they fail again

Just a note of caution! went down the fleabay route first of all, but the only bearings available are 9mm, not the 12mm as fits the new aloy bush or the old plassi one. Contacted bearing services ( multi national company) and guess what the 12mm one is only available by special order £45! or through the automotive industry. This size bearing is as rare as hen's teeth and has no use outside the Auto manufacturing business.
If anyone can find a source, please let me know as I will buy a spare!"

Confused! The bearing in the new alloy housing I have (bought from TVR Carparts this week) is an NSK 6005DU. This is equivalent to an 6005RS or specifically an SKF60052RSH which is available at simplybearings.co.uk for about £8 delivered.

Or am I missing something?

Nope bearing I fitted was a SKF 6005 2RS rubber sealed deep groove ball bearing dimensions 25(bore) x 47(id) x 12mm(width)

The bearing that went in mine was a 6005 2RS (2 Rubber Seals), but I used stainless steel ones, which will not rust for a long time ( there is some mild steel in the metal for durability).
I still have some left in the garage also some FAG std ones (good quality ones) and there are some roof catches aswell.
Dont buy cheap bearings get quality ones - FAG / SKF etc NOT chinese ones, my supplier buys chinese ones for about 70pence each so guess the quality.

I received my 3 part bulkhead bearing kit from TVRCarparts today, £32.40 delivered.
It has a FAG 6005RSR bearing fitted to the machined aluminium housing, along with a genuine ford plastic insert part number 83-BB-3K730-AF

We are always quick to critisise overpriced parts here and there but for this I say good job Neil & the guys - a bespoke part at a great price. Very pleased I bought this.

Hi Chris, Did the same job last week as well. TVR parts were great, arrived in two days. The alloy houseing would take half a day to make on a lathe on its own. Did make a rubber and alloy dust & water cover to stop water dripping on my feet in the future, that fits on the outside, so fingers crossed

I haven't done mine yet - hoping to get it sorted on Sunday.
I was just going to cut a disc of rubber with a triangular hole in it to fit on the shaft - is that roughly what you did?
Can you post a pic?

OK got the old one out - it was OK actually and I didn't realise that the plastic insert had come loose, fallen out and slid down the shaft.
Anyway I've bought the new one now so its going on.
It would have been nice if TVRCarparts had supplied it with fixing bolts, but for the record I thought I'd list here that you need 5 x M5x30 or M5x35 bolts if your bulkhead is a bit thicker than mine, 5 x M5 Nyloc nuts and 10 x M5 flat washers. Bolt heads are M8.
Oh and you need Mr Tickle arms biggrin
This is one job that is just about impossible to do on your own.

I have virtually no M5 bits so its staying in bits for today.

Note that the new bolts need to be longer than the old ones, I think that has been said before.

Unless you make a little metal ring and solder the five bolts into it then push through from inside car and pop nuts 'n washers on from engine side.

I used s/s cap head bolts when I did mine. So much easyer as you can use a allen bit on a 1/4" socket extension, you dont need to steal a child to stuff in the foot well to hold the spanner. No wonder my grandkids have stopped coming around!

Hope this image is of use, I made the outer disk of 2mm aloy The rubber gasket is 1.5 canvas layerd rubber, and the centre is the old centre bush cut down on the lathe. Hope this helps

Ment to add, that I replaced bolts with stainless cap head bolts! so much easyer to fit than hex bolts. You just need a long allen key on a 1/4 socket extension so you can reach past the peddles with ease. run nuts onto the outside then hold them with a pair of mole grips. Did mine on my own in 10 min

I have been meaning to post again on this thread - the feel through the steering is improved immensely since fitting the new bearing - the old one didn't feel knackered although the plastic housing was a bit out of shape.
Well worth fitting if you have the original.

I drove mine for the 1st time since replacing the bearing on tuesday. So much better, but mine was totaly seized. Took the advice and bought the complet kit from TVR spares, which included the new Alloy housing
