SCH2011 - Nearly time to book and a small change
Discussion
I'll post soon when the booking forms are on line, but I have now finalised the itinery for SCH2011. Unfortunately the track day element has had to be cancelled due to insurance issues for the runway lighting as RAF Shawbury is an active miltary airfield, so this has been replaced with something a little different. See the wiki above for details

I was going to post last night and see if there was an update.
Great shame about the insurance. Runway lighting is expensive so I can understand the issues, however I think Adam S3 is AGL qualified so we could have asked him to fix any breakages
I'm looking forward to the event, not sure if I'll do the Snowdonia run but it sounds like a good idea

Does anyone klnow it it's possible to hire a caravan for the two nights? If so, is anyone interested in sharing?
Joe, are you planning to tow it there with the S? - That will be a sight to see...Ref change of plan for Saturday;
Snowdonia...mountains....Memories of Euro Tour...I like the sound of that - Just remember guys: Remove your brake dust covers first.

Have spares can travel!!!!!!!
Unfortunately the insurance issue was:I could get insurance but not really viable because,
1. Lights are right on edge of runway so risk of damage was reasonably high
2. Excess was quite high and TVRCC not happy with level of risk and potential loss of NCB (two way discussion between me and them and we jointly made the decision - so no TVRCC bashing please)
3. Defence estates have to conduct the repairs
4. They have to be repaired within 24 hours (i.e. over the Sunday)
5. Insurance company would have no chance to challenge bill via usual loss adjusters
6. Almost like insurance company giving blank cheque to Defence Estates
Basically had the lights been set further back and the risk of damage (in my opinion from site visit) not been as high as it was we would have been on for the day.

Mark, the advantage of airfields over tracks is that you can screw up and not destroy you car due to the huge run off available. Runway lights aren't exactly soft and forgiving so I think I would be quite nervous had they been right at the edge of the driving area.I could get insurance but not really viable because,

You've worked hard to get this all sorted and I trust your call on the 'track day'. Looking forward to the epic Saturday run!
Well done to you, Norman, Jaye and Gary. Can't wait for June!

Totally agree. Well done to you, Norman, Jaye and Gary. Can't wait for June!

For me run through Wales is not a compromise at all. In fact in someways I'd prefer this to the runway time anyway.
Fingers crossed I can be there in June

These wouldn't have damaged the car, they are little "mounds" that stick out of the tarmac by about 2cm at the centre so you'd have felt a bump as you went over them, unfortunately they are easy to break if driven over and as they are aboput every 10 yards or so there is a good chance of running over a few. The massive runway lights you'll all be thinking of were so far back they weren't an issue. You've worked hard to get this all sorted and I trust your call on the 'track day'. Presumably aircraft drive over them - how come they aren't all broken already?
Aircraft (should!) only go down the central lights so they are capable of putting up with an aircrafts weight. The lights at the side of the runway are usually right next to or on the grass and shouldn't have anything go over them. I think sometimes they are actually quite large things rather than sunken which is what I presumed. These ones seem to be halfway between large solid (but very breakable) ones and the strong hidden ones.I can understand the reluctance to break them though, even if the cars would be fine I want to be able to screw up and not worry about getting lynched by the TVRCC!

Aircraft stick to the middle of the runway (normally) and don't take the corners tight like a car would so the aircraft would never get within 10 or more yards of them unless they c**k up, the lights are all along the edge of the runway to give the lines between which aircraft should land. The ones in the middle of the runway are much stronger and not an issuemep12345 said:

On a airfield event some years ago I saw someone be a little too enthusiastic and run off at a bend in a Catherham. They stopped very quickly when they slid into one of the runway lights and almost flipped the car. It did take one the front corners off. Fortunately the occupants were OK. It was a heart stopping, slow motion moment watching it and slowed me right down! That was on one of these classic tour type trips with the airfield circuit as a bit of a bonus. So helmets, roll cages etc. weren't required.
Obviously not now an issue here but I hadn't thought about how solid those lights are until then, makes you think.

Gary
I think you want to forget about running over runway lights and start worrying about running into Welsh Sheep !!!
I think I'll be driving down on the saturday, arriving just as you guys get back from Snowdonia, in time for the BBQ, refreshments (if Tom brings any this year
) and debate
Not long now...
