Steering Couplings part II

Just a quick update on my steering coupling issues,they have been returned to the supplier and a refund given, the lack of quality of the reurned joints were of concern to them hence the refund. The upper coupling I managed to re-use after freeing it off with loads of WD40 and then plenty of oil and grease it is now as good as new, the lower joint was worn so I had to replace it, I went back to the people who reconditioned my steering rack http://www.steering-racks.co.uk/ujs/ and got a forged group 4 coupling for £16 + vat and carriage (cheaper than r***y d****n) and the quality it has to be said is far superior, hope this helps any body else in the future.

can u get the upper coupling also from these guys anyone have a ref no as i need to replace mine so im going to do bulkhead bearing upper and lower couplings nige.

As far as I know they only list the lower group 4 type, although it is worth a phone call regarding the upper sierra joint as they were really helpfull when I used them.

I used the Rally Design Forged lower UJ for the V6 on my V8 power steering conversion (yes I know - but it fits perfectly) and couldn't fault it - so they must have changed supplier for some chinese rubbish or something.

Just to confirm things as I see them, aparently RD did switch to getting their couplings made in Asia, I ordered upper and lower from them and as stated in another thread the upper joint would not fit the triangular steering shaft and there was "so much play" in both joints IMHO they would have been dangerous to use which is why they refunded me straight away and they also stated that the quality was a concern to them.
If my upper coupling could not have been re-used then I was going to get a Ford one and sod the extra cost. By the way the RD lower coupling looks nothing like the one in your picture Chris, the UJ's themselves have a much smaller diamater.
Back to the original topic "pay the extra and go to a ford dealer"
