Well, having dropped out of the bidding for a pair of alloy 2.9 rocker covers long before they sold for £91 (anyone on here?) I was a little more successful with this.....





Basically a brand new, never been run late model (hydraulic tappets) engine.



A little "shop soiled" but its near enough all there !

First question is, should I use the hydraulic lifters ? My solid tappets are very rattley no matter how accurately I adjust them, think these will be quieter ?

I would go hydraulic, unless you have a special engine that needs a rev range higher than the hydraulic lifters will tolerate. Note that the type of lifter affects the cam profile so unless you know what you're doing with the cam it'd be safest to stick with the lifters it was built with.

If it's a brand new Ford engine I would leave it alone, just dress it with all your ancilliaries etc and fit it and forget it.

My S3C had hyd lifters and they were fine with no rattling problems (sometimes if it had been left for some time the tappets would rattle slightly (2-3 secs) until the oil got through which is not unusual for them) but there was no problem with it not revving so that should not be an issue assuming they are set up correctly. (Instructions for the are on the Steve Heath Publishing website - look for updates for the S manual and the instructions are there).

Didn't mention I'm planning on moving Piper cam over from existing engine and man at Piper say NO it won't work with hydraulic tappets

Cam and tappets wear together so if you move the cam you also should re-use the tappets that are on it now lobe for lobe - don't mix them up.
