Exhaust Manifold Refurbishment

Hi Al,

I'm ln the process of cleaning up my engine bay, cleaning and repainting brackets, changing rusty brackets for aluminum , etc. However the thing that sticks out is my rusty exhaust manifolds. Does anybody know the best way to remedy this, is there a paint I can use that lasts for more than a week?????? I would be grateful for ant advice.

I used matt black VHT exhaust paint - brush on - from Halfords and it works fine
Get as much rust off first.
Or you could use exhaust wrap ?

Or stainless steel manifolds

Can you get the manifolds off to clean up and paint properly? You have a much better chance of a good result if you do. You'll need to use a proper exhaust manifold paint (there are plenty around to choose from) and follow the instructions carefully - preparation is always crucial.

You could have a look at http://www.camcoat.com/main/site . I had my plenum and rocker covers done and they look very nice. Good alternatiove to stainless steel but only worth it if your manifolds are in good nick.

I recently took one of my manifolds off to replace a leaking gasket, the quality of the original TVR manifolds are very poor in my opinion (very poor welds and ridges) looking inside them has indicated to me that very poor gas flow will be taking place, so when i can afford it I will be replacing them with some high quality ones, stainless ones are the way to go IMO.

I had intended getting mine cermachromed but when I got them off and saw the condition (see above) I opted for some new stainless ones from ACT. Very pleased with them so far. If you do go down this route be aware they will not stay a shiny silver. Once they've heated up a few times they go a dull gold colour. If you want the shiny silver finish you could look intot he possibility of having a set made up from quality mild steel and then have them cermachromed, or what ever finish you want.
