I am thinking of swapping my car engine out for a newer ulez friendlier one. But I cannot seem to get a straight answer from the Ulez people! All I get is they may still register the car as it registered - even when I replace the 1.8 unit with another Ulez euro 5 unit of the same 1.8 unit thingy - It works out that it will make the car faster as the old unit is only 8 valves, its for a VW golf

I was thinking to swap like for like. But also I dont need speed so even thought of replacing it with a 1.4 unit - but thought that would involve extra paperwork; As if my current unit blew out or died(its got over 100K miles) I would still have to replace it anyway... so might as well replace it with a similar engine. So it would be a case of swapping out engine numbers and the brand would still be the same i.e. VW.

With the Ulez people being silly; I mean they say I am allowed to retro fit the car with tech i.e. a catalytic converter of some sort (somebody has suggested this) and I am looking into it. But what if I hit my head went totally stupid and decided to pay for an electric unit at £22,000 (yes you heard right - and I would still need to add more stuff like upgrade brakes or something), the Ulez people would still register it as "petrol" and I now read that all cars will have to pay CC in 5 years time anyway...... So whats the point and incentive to?

I have bought a bandage for my head. To stop the bleeding onslaught! (see what I did there?) Heeelp!

What are other people doing? I love my car, its got great sentimental value, I finally convinced my father who has since passed on, that it was a good buy - had to wait 18 years as he would not let me buy it at 19, so had to grow up and then he helped me; then maddeningly goes "Oh, this is fun.." I wanted to strangle him there and then! but he helped pay for bits and servicing so we bonded again and made up over it. Which is why I dont want to sell it.

Also plan to be buried in it - yes folks Im going to be laid out to rest in it, so look at it this way. It ll be like an open casket!!!! With the roof down for lying in state and Roof up for buriel... I wont have any coffin fees to pay - Just drive me into the ground.... hands on the wheel attached with white ribbon - Yes jesus, let me at this wheel.... - I get to write tag ownership on that one. As I roll on by...

I have put some thought into it... actually much though; I havent got the music sorted out yet, and if I am in bits - it scuppers this plan, as it will only be one or two charred hands attached to the steering wheel.....with nothing else! Nah, Im not that morbid, will put lcd screens in the car windows and have virtual me driving...See?

I think it will be organic - as it will all be rust, rubber, petrol and plastics! What do you say?

The car would have to go VOSA for type approval, then it would be changed on a new issue V5, then after this details can go off to TfL.
They would check over everything on the car, more extensive than a MOT. It is the same kind of test for grey imports, kit car builds and if you want to change the build of the vehicle.
