Question re Newcastle Metro

Hi, I'm planning on using newcastle metro tomorrow re great north run - can anybody advise if I can buy tickets at station with c/card or do I need cash (coins?). There are 5 of us so it's a lot of coins ! Travelling up from Teesside and thinking about leaving car at Fellgate or Heworth (both shown on map as park & ride) rather than getting snarled up in S/Shields, unless anybody has a better suggestion
