Hi all,

I urgently need a timing chain replacement for the girlfriend's '04 Corsa 1.4 (It's making the dreaded rattling sound quite loudly at idle). It is slightly overdue for replacement as the car's done 44,800 miles (they should be changed every 40k - I previously had it in mind that it was every 60k). Of course, Vauxhall stealers want in the region of £500-600, which is outrageous considering that it's not a big job for a competent mechanic.

I have obtained a quote of £200 for the same job from Miller Auto Centre in Ilkeston, Derbyshire. My question is: Is that too cheap? Are they trustworthy or are they likely to do a poor job and wreck the car as a result?

Alternatively, can anyone recommend somewhere that I can trust to do the job properly for a fair price? - Typing this, I can count myself fortunate that I've not had to look for someone to do anything other than routine servicing for a while (the garage I usually use doesn't do this work).

Many thanks in advance for any help / advice as it will be greatly appreciated.thumbup

Hiya.

Im ilkeston born and inbread, yet had to google where this place was! (shame on me).

In reguards to price, it sounds very good. There are mobile mechanics offering around the same price, according to the internet. In reguards to not doing it properly and wrecking the engine, its hard to say. They will either replace the chain plus tensioner (which makes the chain stetch and tap) or they wont. I personally would have it done at that price. Alot of smaller garages charge circa 250 pounds.

Hi, thanks.

Yes - I forgot to mention the tensioner in my post, however the quote I mentioned did include it (the chain & tensioner apparently come as a kit for this car). I just need someone trustworthy to do the work really.
