I have to be in Birmingham City Centre (Smallbrook Queensway) for 09.30 next Wednesday and will be driving from Derby coming into the city on the A38. Is there much congestion heading into the city from the north at that time of day, or is the traffic fairly free flowing?

I commuted into Bham from near Tamworth for over 9 yrs & in the end decided that the quickest route was to use the M42/M6 though if you need to be in for 9.30 you should be behind the rush hour traffic hopefully. Have you thought about catching the train instead either from Derby or somewhere en-route? - I know it is a bit non 'PC' to mention public transport on a motoring forum, but it might be worth considering & you would only have a 5 minute walk at the other end & be able to relax instead idea

The problem is Birmingham can be unpredictable. I drove into the centre last thursday evening and a trip that normally takes an hour to an hour and a half and the delays were all within 2 miles of the centre.

You would be best going in by train if you have a station closeby.

Smallbrook Queensway is right in the heart of the centre and can be a pain in the arse to get to at any time of day.

It's a very short walk from New Street Station though so, as above, the train probably makes more sense.

Well combine a drive with a train and go from Lichfield on the cross city line.

Or better yet Four Oaks a little further down the line with a more regular service and good sized car park.
