I'm probably going to be re-locating for a new job, the job is office based and in Clay Cross.

I don't know the area at all, but I'd like to start looking at where I could live.
Absolutely must live less than 30 miles away, preferably under 10.

Must be a decent area, I'd ideally like a nice little suburb where there's bars and shops within walking distance. (places akin the Horsforth, Chapel Allerton andHeadingly in Leeds.)

Not sure that It makes a difference, but I'll be house sharing...

Any recommendations much appreciated, I'll be driving there over the weekend to have a scout around.

Assuming you mean Clay Cross near Chesterfield?

Don't live in Clay Cross. It's improving, but in no way does it resemble Chapel Allerton or Headingley. I'm not entirely sure that anywhere in Chesterfield does. I live a few miles from Clay Cross, btw.

For what you appear to be looking for, you're better off in the Matlock area, possibly, or nicer suburbs of north Nottingham/Derby and south Sheffield.

Its never something we have been able to do well in that area (cafe culture) but probably the nearest thing would be Matlock as mentioned or Bakewell. The latter is normally a bit higher priced and both get very busy with tourists. Otherwise, its lots of ex-mining areas that have undergone regeneration and had housing development. Even though the roads are nice at the right time, you don't want to stray too far if it becomes a regular commute.
Even the suburbs of Derby which have a good link via the A38 aren't particularly renowned for a cafe culture but have the city centre of Derby an easy bus ride away and plenty of nice-ish places around. The best are Allestree, Mickleover and some parts of Oakwood offer a good choice of houses.
PM me if you want some more info - 20 years in Matlock and 20 years in Derby to base this on!!
