I regularly work at the Royal National College for the Blind in Hetrford, and whenever I stay there are always two places on my list.
The Barrels.... real ale pub on St Owen Street.
Just a brilliant pub. Complete cross section of society in there, and they know how to look after their beer. Only gripe would be that they do not open late (11pm or midnight on Fri/Sat)
Kamal Tandoori on Widemarsh Street.
Superb food, and when the old man who is the owner is at work, it is entertaining as well.
One evening, about eight of us went in and after a long day couldn't be bothered to even read the menu... so just said to the old man "Just feed us... he likes chicken... he likes beef.... those two don't like too spicy"
Old man was like a kid in a sweet shop.... he just kept feeding us until we surrendered.
It was probably the best Indian meal I have ever eaten, and when the bill came, he hadn't taken the piss.... worked out at £22 a head including drinks.
