I'm currently looking at the different types of 7 builds that are available from various manufacturers. I'm considering Tiger, Westfield and MK Indy mainly but am open to suggestions.

Are there any PH Midlanders that have such a car ?

Any reason for the above selection, what is your budget and what are you going to use it for predominently i.e. track, road?

I have a standard Roadsport Caterham Seven if you fancy a spin? You can pick one of these up from £9,000+ in the winter

If I'm realistic, my budget will be less than £10k. It will be mainly for road use although I may do a very occasionaly track day once I get bitten by the bug wink I've read a lot about bike engines cars and seen a lot of videos on YouTube etc. Whilst I'd love the manic acceleration and the noise of such a car I'm sure it would soon become a bit of a pain - as would driving slowly around town where I understand their gearboxes dont like to be.

No particular reason for the above selection but they seem to be fairly popular and the engineer in me fancies building a "giant airfix kit".

I'm trying to get a good grasp of what is out there and the relative advantages etc. of each brand. If it turns out that the (usually) more expensive Caterham route is the most suited for me I'll have to think about waiting a year or so longer than anticipated - As it is, I'm looking to start a build in the spring of next year.

Then there is the build/buy dilema that I also need to get sorted. I've no problem with building a car and doing so would be enjoyable. However, if someone else has ironed out most of the problems I can see the advantage there too (but have they created any problems along the way?)

So many choices, so many options........... this is going to take some time!

Why not look at some of the other 'cheaper models' eg Robin Hood - 2ltr pinto not stupid but not too sensible either, easy(ish) to build?

Quite a few people around here with Sylva (now Raw) Strikers - see here:

http://web.mac.com/rawuk/iWeb/Raw/Home.html

If you're interested in seeing local cars then see the JPSC website here:

http://www.jpsc.org.uk/jpsc/index.asp

or pop along to this forum where there are squillions of owners (well, a few hundred anyway!)

Great little cars!

Book yourself a testdrive at the Westfield factory. They're eager to sell and will give you a tour of the factory, show you the cars being assembled, then hand over the keys to a demonstrator and let you take it out on your own or with a mate for as long as you like. Only problem is they will then phone you non-stop for weeks trying to get you to sign on the dotted line.

Personally I'd go for the Caterham as it seems a better built car. The Westfield 1800 Supersport I testdrove felt underpowered unless you really gave it some throttle. No torque. Still great fun though. The Caterham just feels better. It feels right. It has an air of quality and breeding which the Westfield lacks. Hence the difference in depreciation.

I'd be tempted to also try the Tiger Super Six. Avoid Robin Hoods.

I live just north of Stafford and have a Tiger Super 6, built from a kit in '02.
It's SORN at the moment though frown 'cause of moving house but if you want any info on it and Tiger (nothing bad to report on either front TBH) shout up!
