golf mk1 2 litre 16 valve anygood????
Discussion
I've just recently completed a mk1 16v project and absolutely love it! See details here:

However, be wary though as some conversions can be a little dodgy and the standard brakes/wheels/suspension on the mk1 aren't up to the additional power (it's arguable that they're not upto the standard motor anyways!).
But being a lighweight and relatively stiff chassis, it's an excellent combination.
All I say is do some reasearch. Check out the Club GTI forums and the Mk1 Golf Owners Club.

The 9a is a good motor; it's longitudanly mounted in the Audi 80 GT (not passat) so ancillaries are required from a KR or ABF (transverse) engine for the conversion.
Essentially, there's few differences between the 9a and a KR other than a little more capacity. IRRC the cams are a bit mellow in the 9a so these can be replaced for KR or ABF items for a few more ponies
Im fairly certian that due to the cams, the 2.0 9a actually makes less HP than a 1.8 KR!!!!
If you've never driven/been in a mk1 16v before I think you may have a shock of just how bloody quick they are!

9a was available in the Passat GT and Corrado 16v. 6a was found in the Audi 80 et al.
If its a 9a conversion, make sure that the injection system (K-Jet) is working really well and that it idles properley. if it isn't set up correctly it will hunt all over the place and generally feel a bit poo.
9a's had the weekest cams of all 16v VW's as they struggled with early 90's emmission laws. swap the inlet cam for a KR item and your flying.
I've recently swapped my 9a based 16v for a more modern ABF unit from a mk3 16v as i got fed up with the K-Jet system.
