What is it with Derby - is it only for people who live there?

I live mid way between Nottingham and Derby and always shop in Nottingham but have heard people saying how good the new Westfield centre in Derby is, so as I wanted to do a bit of shirt shopping I thought I'd go and see if it lived up to the hype.

I've always maintained that every time I go to somewhere in Derby that I get lost, and today I find that I still do. Both going in and coming home !!

The Westfield Centre. It's huge. There are about 4 car parks. It has a cinema.
So you'd think they are expecting people to come in their cars wouldn't you.
So from the main A50 into Derby, how many signs are there for this place. NONE. Not bleeding ONE ranting

And on the way home - I'm following signs for A6 Loughborough until I get to fork in the road, one way looks like a continuation of the road I'm on and the other is a flyover. There are loads of signs but they were all for local placenames. A6 Loughborough is completely ignored.
Needless to say I took the wrong way.

What is it with Derby. Can no-one spell, or are signmakers banned after some uprising in the past.

Oh, and they charge for parking. Great.

Edited to add. And the website for Westfield is pants too. What the hell is the point of having a website with a map on it if you can't click on the map to see a big version and its the size of a postage stamp :Grrrrrrr:

Sorry Westfield but next time I get the urge to go shopping in a major centre I'll be going past the signs for Derby and spending your parking fees on fuel for a trip to Meadowhall.

Rant over.

The A50 is nowhere near Derby, it just skirts the suburbs at the very south of the City, you can turn off at Shardlow, Chellaston or Findern. If you live midway between Nottingham & Derby, just take the A52, it pretty much goes straight to the Westfield.

Or better still, take the A52 to Wyvern Park and Ride. £2 for car park and bus for upto 7 people. Bus every 10mins.

Aah, sorry BG, my mistake. I meant the A52.
I went M1 J24 to J1 J25 then down the A52 into Derby. As instructed by the website I got to Pentagon island and followed the sign for city centre. When I get there I find the signs are for City South and City North. I chose North but guess what - WRONG!
It was only when I turned around and was heading back that I spotted a P sign for Westfield. Just an ordinary sign by the flyover, not one of the big green or yellow jobs I was expecting to find.

My theory is whats the point of signs if they can't read, explains it all relly!! same as Birmingham used to be and still is in places.

I agree that Derby is one of the worst signed cities I have ever driven through.. and apart from the new shopping centre the town is filthy and like a seaside town out of season. IMO there is no good reason for visiting Derby.

Yep, A52 to the Pentagon roundabout, you want to be in L1 or L2 at the roundabout, not L3. Take the second exit which is straight on, and then fork left and get into L2 after you have forked left, then move right one more lane as the road curves left and opens out onto a multi lane junction. Westfield and the old Eagle Centre multi story car park is right in front of you.

I drive into the City Centre and park on road though, it's usually a doddle as most people are convinced you can't just drive in and park up on road in town, they use the car parks or the park & ride, and that suits me just fine.

I don't like the Westfield centre - don't know anyone who does. Except, maybe, my mum but she just likes 'having a coffee' in the place.

The thing is a huge blot on the landscape. Derby's skyline used to stand out with the cathedral and church dominating. Now you just notice a huge grey box (the cinema) on top of the shopping centre. It looks like some kind of nuclear power plant!

If you do want to try my city again try this route.
M1 J24 to A50 travel as far as alvaston turn off A6 just pass garages opposite each other filter lane!
To island turn left (london road) follow for 4 miles do not leave the A6 Westfield facing you use car park opp argos leave at same exit and follow A6 back (signposted)biggrin
If that don't work use the Internetlaugh
