Location enquiry re: house purchase- Derby DE12 (end of M42)
Discussion
Anyone live there?
What is it like, in particular Overseal, Donisthorpe, Measham?
We are going to look at a couple of houses there but I'm none too familiar with the area...
Any comments very much appreciated.
Some of you may recall I was asking about local areas some two years ago...still havent found a house after all this time (fortunately, the way prices have fallen!)
Currently I rent in Knowle, B93. Are there any villages around the end of the M42 area that are as nice?
Thanks in advance!

I know this area very well, and have done for the last 35 years. It is an ex-mining area, deep mine and opencast, and 30 to 35 years ago you wouldn't have wanted to live there at any price. Over the years it has transformed into a much more green and pleasant land, helped by the National Forest development. It actualy has caravan sites and people come to stay for hollidays. House prices have also grown. If you want to buy a 4 bed detatched, in say Albert Village, it will cost about £230,000. 30 years ago you could have bought Albert Village for that. If you are buying a house more than 20 years old, be aware of the mining subsidence, and look on Google earth/maps at how close to the A42 it is, because of the noise.
This is as unbiased as I can be, I don't live there, but work for a local company visiting houses in the area and have done for 35+ years.

We're looking to move to this area too.
We like Measham, although we prefer Ashby as a nice market town. We didnt like castle Gresley etc (and Burton) but Ashby and Measham are nice.
Good value property, with excellent links to the east and west midlands.
watch Ravenstone though: there's take of resuming a mine there (!). And Coalville is not a very nice place at all.

Let us know if you purchase anything, we can have a PH meet! I have a (non-posting but PH classifieds surfing) petrolhead colleague who lives in Shepshed too.
Measham could be very expensive potentially, bloody great British Car Auctions site there I noticed today!
Going to look in and around Ashby tomorrow, drove through it today and it looks good from what I saw.
Just the name 'Coalville' says enough! That said, 'Atherstone' sounds very quaint and rolls off the tongue but that's deceiving!
I have customers at RR Derby who've given me a heads up as well. Apparently Swadlincote and Derby are best avoided.
Overseal is nice, Moira and Donisthorpe nice and quiet too.
My wife doesn't drive so Measham is about as restrictive as I would want to be, for amenities.

No offence intended!
Just going by what people at RR have said, and also the only part of Derby I have seen is the area where RR is based.
ETA Going to look at a few in Ashby de la Zouch today, one is looking very favourable so I will update the post again later!

Viewed a few in Ashby today and while I really like the town the outlying villages offer better value for money. I understand schools in Ashby are better but we don't have kids yet so we're at least 6 years off having to worry about that.
Moving forwards on a place in Measham now, price not quite yet agreed but we're close. Will keep you posted.

We bought a new build in Donisthorpe in about 2000 and moved on a couple of years ago.
Nice enough village, very quiet but with no shop and only a couple of small pubs. No real issue as such but it was either Measham or Ashby for the takeaways / shopping.
The walks around the new national forest / canal / moira furnace area were handily placed and an enjoyable enough place for a stroll / run / bike.
The area generally has improved year on year following the demise of the mining industry with places like conkers, the national forest and the canal redevelopment programme. Additionally a lot of people have moved along the M42 "corridor" from the Birmingham / Tamworth area which has strengthened the economies of Ashby and Swadlincote in particular. Can only see the area continually improving tbh.
P.S - If you need DIY stuff for your new place then Jerrams Hardware in Measham is a little goldmine of stuff as is K.Borleys in Donisthorpe.

thanks for the tips, been on Harveys website looking at furniture already. We've survived on a minimum of 'stuff' since moving back to the UK in 2006 as we have been in rented pretty much since we got back (sold flat in Nov 2006) and knew that we would be moving again to a purchased house...didnt think it would be quite this long though!
2 1/4 years living out of boxes in a drafty 2 bed terrace!
Cant wait to move to be honest!

Please post picture of garage! Most important room in the house, IMHO.
All bets might be off now, there is a 'problem' with the house that cannot be 'fixed'

It is a very sad and tragic thing, that is all I will say.
Very sad.

Subsidence or underground fire?
Neither (not sure either of those really warrant a 'cry' smiley)Fire, but accidental, internal to property and the vendor's partner died. Happened less than 2 years ago.
As I said, tragic.
Estate Agent got a new ahole torn over the phone as we did ask him in a roundabout sort of way if there was anything sinister to worry about.
I work away once in a while, my wife would be in that room alone; I presume it was the master bedroom as the news story I found via googling indicated fire started in bedroom.
Counting lucky stars we found out at this stage.
I used to have little time for Estate Agents, I now despise this particular agent.
