Done lot's of this sort of thing, it's good fun.
The secret is in having a passenger who is prepared to put the effort in and not let the concentration lapse. You don't need huge concentration, but if he/she misses a junction it can be a pain getting back on track.
It's easy really, but like a lot of things it can seem daunting to begin with.
Have fun.

Make sure you have a pen/pencil to strike through each instruction as you pass them, and keep an eye on the mileage as you pass each instruction. There will be a difference between your mileometer and the organisers, so you might find that if you note the mileages too you will see the difference and know what you should add or subtract to yours, should there be a junction that might be tricky to find.
Sorry to make it sound tricky, but it isn't really and once out on the event you'll see what i mean.
You may be interested to know that MX5s have speedo needles that can obscure the milemeter reading to a degree, and there are people on ebay selling modified dials to deal with this problem.

Tulip's are easy wait until you try a circular herring bone
The only thing to remember is to start at the dot and end at the arrow. Make sure you get a copy of the pink OS map for the area as it'll make it easier to figure out where you are if you get lost. There's a guide to road rallying here: http://www.doublegmotorsport.com/rrguide/rrguide.h... you don't need most of the info in it but it'll give you a good over view and has some tulip's in it.
Most classic clubbie ones are pretty easy going and you should be able to do it with just a digital watch (trip computers are a tad expensive and need setting up correctly). Make sure you set it to the official time at the start too. Also it's a good idea to email the organisers and let them know you're a newbie, they should give you the details of the basics of how it all works. And make sure you get a list of the abbreviations they use.
