I'll soon be staying in Nottingham for at least 6 months. Is crime really as bad as some of the reports that I've read? Can anyone recommend a nice area to rent a flat, and also where to avoid.

Crimes not that bad as far as I know but it did have a bad spell some years back. I'd probably avoid Radford, Hyson Green area but when you check out a flat check out the neighbourhood to.

I live in Notts currently and agree with the above... avoid Hyson Green, Radford, Sneinton.
Where abouts are you going to be commuting to? Will you be driving?

I'd suggest a) getting a nice flat with underground parking in the city centre (in Lacemarket) or b) living on the outskirts, somewhere like Wollaton or Beeston (both nice, quiet, fairly safe areas)

Option a will be $$$. Currently looking for something also as my tenancy ends end of August... looking in the £90-100 p/w region just to give you an idea of prices (big studio / 1 bedroom)

West Bridgford is really nice, IMHO. A bit posh but some lovely places to live a a nice place to spend time. Excellent facilities, too, again IMHO.

Ideally I'll rent a nice flat in the city centre which is reasonably close to the office. However, I'm always a bit apprehensive of new builds in case they are filled with students or DSS. My budget is anywhere up to approx £700 a month.

For that price you can avoid the japanese/chinese student infested new builds (look for names called Litmus Building, Habitat Building, Marco Island which are student populated). Although do consider Habitat.. its not too bad at all, only a few students (and mainly older ones).

As I say, for £700 a month I think you'll find a small one-bedroom in a good Lacemarket building

£700 will get you a nice place in The Park area of the city centre, 5-10 minute walk from the city centre, quiet, almost private, next to no crime that ive seen, lots of green areas.

I'd say The Park is the place to be on that budget. Try 'The Gallery' or maybe 'Park Valley' to find a decent flat. There are a few students in the Park, but it isn't over run wink

As for crime I only got broken into once, someone tried to stab me and I got 2 parking tickets and a speeding fine in nearly 5 years there. You'll be fine wink

I too would go for the park (i used to be a letting agent and mainly dealt with The Park) anywhere there is generally good, lenton avenue has some nice large flats especially (i once rented out a massive 3bed flat there, and when i say massive i mean massive) for £800 and were talking a couple of years ago!

lol, I live about 5 miles from Nottingham, and was told when I moved up to the East Midlands in 2006 that if you drove into Nottingham you were asked if you had any weapons, and if you didnt, they gave you some biggrin

Personally, you couldnt pay me to live in Nottingham, but then I dont do cities and prefer the semi rural life.

Its the same as any City: there are good areas, and bad areas. You now know the bad areas, so avoid.

If Nottingham is so bad, why would Sytner Alpina have started there? (although they are now in Leicester) Paul Smith? And Graypaul Ferrari?

In the same vein, the largest Bentley dealership in the UK is in Leicester. The Aston dealership is in Derby. Tom Hartley is in an old coal mining village on the Derbyshire/Leics border. Not a million miles from Donington, Norton, Triumph, MIRA, Noble, Ultima, Fenix, Bruntingthorpe, Mallory...

Every area has good and bad areas. Choose the good areas, and you'll be able to relax- I know someone who feels bad as his Aston V8 Vantage is, accoridng to him "the worst car on the street" You pays your money....

They are still in Nottingham... I was talking with them just yesterday. wink

Nottingham isn't that bad.. West Bridgford is nicer (in general) than north of the river.
If you don't like the city, then the surrounding villages (except Clifton) are pretty decent.

if you only going to be staying for six months i'd be very tempted with either a lace market flat

very modern and right in the city centre so mega access to bars / restaurants / cafe's etc

a lot also have underground parking

or the park, the houses are lovely but make sure you get a good landlord as they are that bit older and require maintenance

lots of leafy streets to walk round in the shadow of the castle an only 10 mins walk to slab square and right opposite the canal

you will have to get a residents parking permit also

I lived in Sneinton for twelve years and never got burgled once. You just need to be smart about home security.

My car got keyed a few times but that can happen anywhere.

I got assaulted once but that was at 5pm in a buy supermarket.

Sneinton has improved greatly in the past three years as a result of increased policing foot patrols. The local police are spot on and calls to police were always responded to within minutes.

West Bridgford is pleasant, as is Carrington and Sherwood. Mapperley Park is very attractive but whenever I or friends visited a friend there we got our cars broken into and windows smashed so that put me off ever renting there. If you don't mind moving further out Gedling would be my first choice - very attractive properties with ease of access to country roads and to Nottingham.

I'd avoid St Anns, Hyson Green, Basford, New Basford, Radford, Lenton.

When I looked at renting in The Park I found the flats to be very shabby and poorly maintained. To get a good place you'll be shelling out the best part of £1K I'd have thought. I used to work in The Park (2000-2005) and there were a lot of aggravated burglaries. I don't know if this is still the case.
