Morning all, I don't really want this in food and drink as its a fast moving forum and will disappear, so I'm calling on local knowledge for suggestions!
Me and the Mrs like to eat out, nothing fancy just honest pub food at our local etc.
I'm not a fan of chain pubs and restaurants so we prefer to find small quality places to eat.
What I'm after is somewhere a bit different to eat from the usual - the type of food ethnic, seafood etc is not important as we enjoy most dishes and are always willing to try something different.
So can you guys put forward some suggestions for "somewhere special" i.e Birthdays, anniversaries etc to eat
Also some places less formal for say a casual evening meal.
We enjoy going to the Joiners Arms in Bruntingthorpe, The Bewicke Arms in Hallaton, and several others if that helps?

Sea food - Barnicles, in Hinkley. Lovely restaurant just off the first junction on the m69 heading out of Leicester.

Indian food -

Spice of India, syston (very 'restauranty' indian food).

Martin Inn, Martin Street, Leicester - more home style indian food.

Curry Fever, Belgrave Road, Leicester - some of the best indian food available in leicester - quite pricey for indian though.

Italian - Signor Panza, London Road, Leicester. Lovely cosy place. Very friendly staff.

Greek - Mangal, Syston. Lovely cosy place with an open BBQ with great grilled food etc.

Pub food, I know you said you don't like chain pub food, but the Observatory (a Beefeater pub) near the meridian cinema complex, has very good food in the restaurant.

Hope that helps!

Easily one of the worst indian restaurants in the area! Probably doesn't help that I've known people who work there who have confirmed that food is rarely freshly prepared, and often microwaved!

There's a new italian restaurant in Syston opposite Mangal, I can't remember the name but I've heard good things about it.... will be trying it out soon

Royal Chineese Chequers in Quorn

Cedars on Churchgate is good. It's Lebanese cuisine so something slightly different.

The Red Lion at Stathern is worth a visit.

The Wheatsheaf Inn at Woodhouse Eaves serves decent food.

Pacos, The Bell Inn, Monks Kirby. Just outside Leicestershire but the best Spanish restaurant I have been to. Very much a special occasion restaurant as it is on the pricey side.

Quick one - if I really wanted to impress, where would you recommend taking a date for a meal? Not just good food, but also an impressive venue...?

If you are doing Indian on London Road then "The Tiffin" has to be first choice IMHO, Shimlas even after the recent revamp is not up to the same standard.

For a pub (if you can find it smile) The Brookside at Barkby. Excellent beer, all food is only cooked by the owner, all fresh. Wide range on the menu (very wide for one chef) good portions and is £7.95.

Located down a single track lane, no through traffic and by the side of a brook. A hidden gem.

I doubt that place would impress.

More like this... www.primahotels.co.uk/quorn/dining-en.html

or this.... www.the-grey-lady.co.uk which has or did have menus for the ladies without prices in them as they never pay!
