I need to take BG down to Phantom Motors at Crondall near Farnham, M1/M25/M3, and it would be very convenient if someone would like to follow me down in my Fabia and fetch me back. It won't cost you anything, other than your time. Beer tokens and a meal out are on offer, as well as a nice day trip. It could prove interesting too, as I will be nursing BG all the way there, and he might not make it, so my AA membership will be on standby.

Very early stages of head gasket failure, noticed it last Sunday. Temp was a little high and the heater didn't work. Expansion tank was dry, topped up about 3 litres, the coolant level was fine the previous Sunday. Currently no cross contamination of the oil and the water. I have clean oil and good oil pressure, so not too worried about running the engine. When topped up, it appears to maintain coolant and temperature whilst being driven, and so far it still drives just fine. It is losing coolant though. It isn't leaking it. I'm pretty sure it's going through the engine, although barely noticeable as exhaust vapour.

I'm going to run it there. As long as the temp is fine and the heater is belting out, and nothing out of the exhaust by way of steam, should be OK if I take it easy. At the first hint of a deterioration, I'll stop and call the AA. I won't be overheating it or taking any risks. I hope.

Hopefully catching it early and sorting it now will save you £££££s.. Defo keep an eye on her... Is there no other garage closer? or are these guys well known for the Bently brand? Its a shame your not near Lyme Regis as I am going to view a 1971 alfa spider either on Saturday or Sunday could have done the drive together!!! Fingers crossed I will be driving the car back up to Derby!

Quite a few actually. Ristes, Paul Mackley, Exclusive cars at Colwick.

But I want Simon & Stuart at Phantom to do this, they do all the major work on the car.

Mission accomplished, if anyone's interested.

No problems. 3 hours there, 2 hours back.
