Speed Cameras on M1
Discussion
I regularly drive down the M1, between J25-27 and today noticed that there have now been some cameras fitted (just before J26 going northbound) and there are signs saying "cameras out of use" next to them. The cameras are the 'variable speed' cameras, similar to those on the M42/M6 and M25.
Has anyone else noticed these? When will these be 'live'? And is it rumours or will these cameras only be activated when the speed is reduced below 70? Are they average cameras?

They've been there a while both North and Southbound.
Only supposed to be active when the signs are showing a speed limit. Not speed averaging.
It's been mentioned on several forums that those on the M42 can now be active when no speed is being shown. Whether this is right or not I've no idea

Oh right.... so they definitely aren't averaging though!? If they were averaging though, it would be really complicated to work out the average speed with all the varying speed limits they do (i.e. how it suddenly goes from 50 to 60 then back to 50 etc).tvrloon said:

I've seen the M42 ones flash when no limit is displayed but unsure if they just flash or whether you get a ticket as well. Don't take the risk anymore as its too costly to save a few minutes.Only supposed to be active when the signs are showing a speed limit. Not speed averaging.

Reading that, they are only enforceable if a variable (non NSL) limit is in place as indicated by a sign on the matrix display, as I believe the M42 ones are. V8LM said:

Oh joy. Well that's my commute well and truly f
ked. The best thing they could do to increase safety and ease congestion on that section of the M1 would be to replace the speed cameras with rocket launchers and use them to enforce some lane discipline into those who think lanes 2 and 3 are for bimbling along completely oblivious to everything going on around them.

I thought you worked near me nowadays? How come you go anywhere near the M1? Surely you'd pop through Pinxton and A38 it? even turning left and going through Alfreton rather than around JCT 28? It can get a tad busy in the rush hour at Little Eaton, but it ain't that bad. M1 seems bonkers to me.

~35mins via M1/A52 on a normal day. Frank Whittle Way/A38 is a nightmare during rush hour. Seeing as you're a part time slacker you wouldn't know that
