No, im not going any further with my 'scratch and sniff' recipe book idea, although its a bloody good idea.
I really fancy a good old road trip at some point this summer. Having cycled from Lands End to John O Groats (LEJOG) a couple of years ago i quite fancy doing the same in a car, but with a twist. How does doing LEJOG in a day sound? Thats nearly 1000 miles in one day!!
My idea would be to set of from LE at sunrise (longest day of the year would be a good day) and aim to get to JOG by sunset, all the while sticking to the speed limit of course
Fuel will obviously be a considerable factor, along with 2000 miles on the car in a single weekend but the expercience i feel would be worth it.
Anyone done it before?
Anyone fancy a convoy? Passengers welcome if they contribute toward fuel cost.

Evo did something similar in an elise a few years ago, although the elected to not use any motorways. Was a great read! I think a motorway jaunt might get a little tedious after a few hours.
I don't know how achievable it would be in a day, just getting from Newquay to Exeter can take 3 hours during the summer. Would be good to do a night run....lots of clear roads to play on!

That's more like it. How about doing it in the winter, from sunset to sunrise?I know Clarkson went East to West overnight on the Longest Day (i.e. shortest night) but you need to allow more time to go South to North, hence winter and a long night. You'd hopefully avoid having your plan scuppered by a single traffic jam..
Looking on the interweb sunrise is around 0440 and sunset would be around 2120 on the longest day giving you about 16 hours and 40 minutes for the journey.
Looking at various route planners gives a distance to travel of around 820 to 830 miles. The AA route planner gives a distance of 825 miles and a time of around 15 hours 40 minutes. This gives around 1 hour for any delays (road works, congestion, comfort breaks, food/eating/drinking, refuelling, fixing car issues).
A big ask for anyone and if you try it good luck.

As has been said, winter really is a no go on this one. Too much ice and snow in the north and way too many gritters hell bent on stripping the paintwork.
The summer idea I think will work ok so long as the midlands and borders regions don't catch me out. Getting out of the southwest at sunrise will give me 3 hours to exit the narrow stretches before rush hour takes hold. From there its a quick blast past the midlands, hopefully avoiding the rush around bristol and the south midlands. If that goes well I reckon the rest should be fairly easy so long as Edinburgh, Perth and Inverness are traffic free. The 1 hour pass / fail window should make this a very close call, thus taking the boredom out of the motorway stretches. Having cycled the roads in the highlands I'm looking forward to getting the //M on those porridge lined twisties.

Yeah, I'm weighing whether or not this is a good idea given the cost of petrol at the mo. The concept is good and the challenge is within reach but it has to be worth it.
Have you seen the 'side to side' thread on the south west forum? June 18th west to east in one night. Might be more sensible.

i think your completely insane! 16 hours in a car no proper breaks, apart from the obvious uncomfort, i feel sorry for anyone on the road after you have been driving for more than 8 hours, lack of concentration and tiredness will set in! your better off making a trip of it and split it up into 2 days.

This is why a passenger would be great help. I'm up in Scotland that weekend (18th) The mileage dosn't unduly concern me. I'm used to high mileage trips both in the UK and in Europe.
Re costs. That is why I would probably use Fiona's 520D Estate! 45+ mpg and very comfy. The Porshe would be beter suited to the drive back if we decide to make a trip of it over a couple of days but no car is perfect. And driving the Porsche on the main journey up would not appeal.
We could make a Top gear type 'challenge' of it. You in the M5 with 500+ bhp and what, 24mpg? Me with 177 bhp and nearly twice the range!

Try 19mpg on that sort of run, only on VPower. I've estimated it might be over £1000 on fuel by the time we are back. Re costs. Eh?1,000 miles South to North, plus another 1,000 for you to get to the start point and home again from Scotland makes 2,000 miles.
2,000 miles at 20mpg is 100 gallons. 100/0.22 = 454 litres. Say £1.49 per litre that's £677 on fuel.
You will have food and hotel bills to pay for too, so I can see it being £1,000 per car including fuel, food and hotel. So maybe £500 each if there's two people in one car.
