Hi,

I've just put a nice stereo in the Civic but it sounds really pants with the standard speakers. In fact, I think the standard stereo sounded better!

I've fitted a Kenwood KIV 700 so it's a pretty decent stereo with DSP and lots of other gizmos.

Now, I think the standard speakers are 6", so what's the best way to go about getting better sound? Simply upgrade all 4 door speakers or is it going to be more technical to get better sound?

Are there any specialists that you'd recommend around the Bournemouth to Southampton area that could advise me? Or do you have any recommendations for some good 6" speakers? They need to be full range as we have no components or subwoofers. Not keen on adding amplifiers and things as we'd like to keep it simple and I'd have thought he HU should be pretty powerful. Basically at the moment the sound is really muffled, there's no definition and I find it really hard to pick out individual instruments. I'd like it to sound clear, crisp and punchy, like a German car stereo!! Damn Japanese cars!

Thanks for any help.

Dan

Speak to Les at Anglesea Car Radio, Southampton. I have been using them for the best part of 20 years.

These http://www.simaudio.co.uk/ have always done good work at finding electrical faults and also do audio.

Thanks. Their website is under construction, but their shop front looks good.

I put a lovely set of Infinity components in the front of my Civic, with my Alpine head unit, it made no difference whatsoever. I ended up sticking an Alpine amp and Kenwood sub in the boot, to give me the bottom end I desired, mainly to over come the high revs and ridiculous road noise. I think it may improve I added liberal amounts of Dynomat, but it's rather dear to say the least and I had the sub from my Mini so in it went.

If you are happy to fit them yourself then I suggest you have a look at the Focal range of speakers. I was at a car show a year or two back and Focal had a stand and although they were not the loudest 'bangin-sound' so to speak the clarity and definition were outstanding. I'm a real hi-fi nut with my home system and although the car is not the perfect place for real hi-fi you can achieve a decent sound. Focal are not cheap speakers but I have a full system including the sub-woofer in my Esprit and have just upgraded the speakers in the A610 with Focals

They look fantastic, but probably a little bit more than we wanted to spend. probably want to get all 4 speakers for about £100 or so if possible.

The one thing I'd never consider are second hand speakers. Almost impossible to tell if they've been abused.

I'm not saying it can't happen. It's just not a path I'd ever consider taking given the amount of quality audio out there available for reasonable money.

I'll second that. Have a look round Halfords, sometimes they have some killer deals - recently got a pair of Infinity 6x9's for under 50 quid. Makes second hand look like a complete waste of time!

I think you need something like these at the very least. You could fit these in the front and see what you think before upgrading the rears.

Another thumbs up for Les at Anglesea, I may even be going in there tomorrow.

They still make those? They're OK, a bit bass light from what I recall, great if you've added a sub.

But, if you just put 2-ways in the doors it will still be flat IMO. Any components with cross-overs will need to have an amp unfortunaely.

Those Alpines were specifically designed to 'upgrade' stock audio systems though. My old Rockford's certainly benefited from some amp 'love' winkyes
