Specialist Engine Garage in the Hampshire area
Discussion
I'm really losing patience with the MR-2 at the moment and as a last ditch attempt before I drive it off the edge of a cliff, I'd like a specialist to have a pour over it.
It's running like a sack of s
t, down on power and getting ass MPG, even considering the fact that it's an NA. I've changed the obvious - lambda sensor, ecu, igniter, coil, leads, distributor cap, and checked the map sensor today, but to no avail.
I know the closest MR-2 specific specialist is in Luton, but in no way can I be bothered to drive up there at 20MPG for a mechanic to shrug and go 'it's f
ked'.
So yeah, any people around here handier with a spanner than the average independent?

I'm no expert but have you checked that all 4 plugs are actually sparking. It's easy to do. If they are sparking then it maybe an issue with fuel delivery.
Maybe worth popping it over to Chris at Reworx in Portsmouth. He had and has worked on many a celica, which is the same engine.

Yep, I've run all the checks on the spark system. I've changed out the leads for some magnecor ones too (which was a crap idea, but that's a different story)
Initially I thought about Re-Worx as I've always pined for an RX-7. I did not know about his abilities with the 3SGE though.
Cheers chap, I'll give him a bell.

It was Chris's brother that owned Reworx but he has moved into something else and they no longer have a rolling road. Chris did most of the work on the fixing front and has kept it running as a normal garage (at least I think it's still running). Initially I thought about Re-Worx as I've always pined for an RX-7. He had a GT4 and did all his own work and often worked on his friends cars so knows quite a bit about the engine.

Ironically enough I was down in Portsmouth earlier too.
I decided to drop in to see Chris at Re Worx, top man who was clearly busy with several cars coming in and out whilst I was there, yet he still found half an hour to advise me on where to go with the car and fondle around with the oily bits. Unfortunately we couldn't find the actual fault at hand, but I've now got a much better idea of where it could be. So it was definitely time well spent.
Either way, I'll definitely be recommending Chris to anyone who needs anything done - the guy really knows his onions.
Edit: Birma, really nice V8 you have there too!

I didn't think these guys had a RR. They don't do mapping on injection cars as far as they told be as they specialise in carbs?I was considering using them for theb Noble.

Was installed probably last autumn time.As for mapping - no idea.
It has the necessary functions to allow full-scale mapping such as speed hold and road simulation programs, though we freely admit that the only management system we've got experience with is Megasquirt. We can't map OEM systems and other systems such as OMEX, GEMS and Emerald are not something we're familiar with, but obviously the principles are the same across all brands. It's just a case of being familiar with the software.
I can't speak for Steve, but I'll also happily admit I'm not the man to turn to for turbo applications! I've owned them, I understand how they work and I can tell you how much power it's kicking out. But I can't tell you how much boost is too much boost

I too recommend Chris who is sorting my Esprit, having tried a few so called Lotus specialists since my ownership of the Esprit I will not be using any of them again and will let Chris do the work.
Have you been to Back on Track, on the Woking road out of Guildford. They are probably the best VX and Lotus specialists in the south.TubbyNorman said:
