Ok fellow south coast people.
I need to get to Rye, East Sussex from Southampton on friday afternoon leaving at 3.30pm.
AA route planner is saying M3, M25,M20 and then A2070. Fair enough.
However the wife is now saying the M25 will be gridlocked at that time and we should go M27, A27 and A259. This route looks a total pain in the harris, surely this route has got more potential to be a car park?
So I open it up to you lot, what do you reckon?
Cheers

Either way you're going to hit traffic. If your setting off at 3.30 I'd chance the a27...you're likely to be approaching. Worthing by 4.30 when traffic picks up so may be a bit slow from there on. I've drove it last month all way to Lydd and was ok...just loads of roundabouts. M25 will be carnage.

i assume you are leaving at 330 because of kids?!

I'd avoid the m25 at that time, the coast way may take a little longer on paper, but its less frustrating and you have options of diverting,

M25 is best avoided

I'd avoid the Hastings and Bexhill bit of the A259 though.

Turn left after Selmeston through Berwick (second left after fuel station), then go through Horsebridge, Herstmonceaux, Battle and Cripps Corner to Rye. It's on smaller roads but they tend to be free flowing and less frustrating. You'll also avoid Polegate which can jam up in the rush hour as everyone's trying to use the one roundabout. Some of these roads are good fun too.

No such thing as a dead cert to avoid traffic in this area as there's no major roads at all, but the above normally works for me!

I'd go Portsmouth to Le Havre. Drive up and go Calais to Folkestone on the Tunnel! But that's me hating to sit in traffic wink

Good luck thumbup

Would agree with this route so far, however, Arundel Worthing will be your biggest headache so go A29, take road through to Storrington some 3-4 miles you will arrive at the Washington roundabout, straight over and follow the road for Worthing, you will save sheds loads of time, I travel this route quite often to Rye, enjoy your stay there, it is truly gorgeous.
