Having just spent the day hooning around Cape Verde on a big old quad im thinking about getting one of my own. Because I know how ridiculous our local authorities can be I was wondering if anyone knew the rules on quad use in the area. Is it really a 'go anywhere' vehicle or are places like the forests and beaches way out of bounds?

What im after is a bit of freedom from the main roads so don't want to buy into it if I can't actually use it anywhere other than on organised and boring pay&play circuits

It'll fall under the same rules as any regular 4x4. Green lanes, B.O.A.T.s,definitive map,GLASS, etc etc blah blah.

The only thing I miss about Scotland: freedom to roam.
You could drive a quad up Ben nevis (probably not legal) and nobody would bat an eye lid. Cycle a pushbike at more than 15mph on the Bournemouth beach track and you get a ticket down here.

same rules as 4x4, if you speed about on green lanes you'll get complaints and it will eventually end up with them being closed

You can take them on tracks across salisbury plain, but you'll need a couple of mates with you incase you come off etc

I was going to suggest Salisbury Plain, as long as it is road legal you will have endless hours of fun!

The mod are asking people to keep off at the mo because of the bonkers amount of water, sensible

Lots of nice lanes over there, I'd consider tagging along in my jimny

There are however usually lots of bikes and quads up there, might be worth joining a suitable club

Something like old Shaftesbury drove is worth looking into, but not for the next couple of months due to rain

Failing that I did a pay and play last week at slab common, immense fun.

Ps I have a trailer that may be suitable for a quad depending on the width, it's a beefy double bike trailer, welcome to borrow that

Thanks guys. Quadding is definitely something I'm considering buying into. Had a great time on the rocky and barren landscape of cape verde.

Good advice especially considering the rain although the pay and play sounds fun, will look that up

There aren't many places that allow quads on pay and play, and I never came across a club that would allow quads to mix with full size 4x4s. Might have changed since I knocked it on the head. You'll get more bang for buck with trials bikes.

Didn't think of them mixing, I'm in a 4x4 club, I'll ask

Anyone point me in the direction to find maps of green lanes around Hampshire that are actually still open. Most maps I have found are rather out of date, or don't include open routes

I just bought the Explorer maps of the area and there are plenty of BOAT roads marked on the map (byway open to all traffic).

The ONLY way to be sure is to consult the definitive map that the county council maintain. Printed maps are almost obsolete the minute they are printed, given that the status of a BOAT can be subject to change on a weekly basis. You also need to download the CCs list of TROs also, as a BOAT may be open to 2 wheels, but not 4.

AH, maybe I'll go with someone who does it regularly and knows some good byways.
