I need a cat flap put on the side of a building, I need someone to make a hole through brick and /or breeze block. I would go and buy a diamond core and do it myself, but £600 or £700 just for the core seems a lot to pay for one hole. I am willing to pay generously if someone can do this for me.

Cheers.

I looked at hiring one, but I cant find a company that has one with a big enough diameter. It needs to be about 21cm in diameter.

Try talking to Clive at Tonbridge Diamond Cutting
http://www.tonbridgediamondcutting.co.uk

He may be able to help you out, he owns TDC and he's a proper petrol head being the owner of a very nice Roger Clark Motorsport built Impreza P1

Had a similar problem a short while back, just ended up buying a 10mm cavity bit (about 30cm long) and chain drilling it then bolstering the rest out. It is covered by the cat flap fascia so you can't see my dodgy hammer work smile

you're welcome to borrow the cavity bit if that helps.

I put a cat flap in for the girlfriends two cats. Doors weren't an option, windows a pain, so I drilled a hole in the wall. The hole required wasn't a circle. More like a square crossed with a circle. I have a core drill and my biggest core is a 5" core, but due to the hole needing to be bigger and the shape no uniform, I gave up on the core drilling route.

The internal wall was plasterboard dot and dabbed onto celcon blocks. A few starter holes and a pad saw saw to the light weight block.

I then drilled a few holes through the new hole I'd cut drilling into the outer concrete block wall. I marked the top two corners and a few other points to get the rough shape.

Wizz around to the outside and draw the rough shape left. Chain drill the shape and knock it out. You've a bit of leeway which the cat flap can cover over. I had to knock up an ickle bit of cement to replace a bit of blown render, but none of the drilled holes are no show.

To drill a 8" core will take some drill. I've a dedicated core drill. I've used SDS drills in the past gifted by employers to drill cores <5" and it knackers the drill. The clutch isn't up to the job. Then the cost of the core which isn't a popular size. All add's up.

Answer, chain drill it. tt it with a hammer. Chisel any rough bits. Fit flap.

The cat flap is actually for our pet rabbits, I previously paid someone to put a cat flap in the back of my garage, he used a core drill and made it look so easy. But I can no longer find the guy. I found someone else, but he wanted £400 !!! to do it. I just need this done with as little hassle as possible. The flap is going into a single skin out building. I guess I will end up drilling it and chisseling it. But thanks for all the suggestions.

What is chain drilling? Is it drilling a series of holes next to one another??

Cheers Ian, I'm not going to be in steley anymore, I'm moving Beaulieu way on Friday. Although thanks so much for offering to help. I think I may go the chain drilling route, and then chisel out the hole as suggested.

Beaulieu eh? Welcome to the New Forest. We did a similar wee project at my mum's place.

We used an angle grrinder and the aforementioned hammer n tt it technique. Took about 30 mins for my brother and I.

Well not Beaulieu, but fairly close. I bought all the gear and will give it a go on Saturday, whilst my mate builds another magnificant bunny run.
