Hello All,
I'm considering a house move. There is a particular house I have my eye on in Bexhill, but also looking at surrounding areas.

Anybody live in the area and can advise on what it's like? ie. sleepy, full of young/old people, good for families or not etc.?

Anything of particular note in the area such as beauty spots, stately homes etc?

Cheers,
Groomi

Sleepy town, city centre last time I visited was near enough ghostly.
Just down the road in little common is a old raf base which is now used to store the arabic students. (Behind the Jet Petrol station on road to Pevensey)

Pevensey you've got the Castle, and Herstmonceux Castle with Gardens and Observatory Science Centre.
Venture over to Hastings and you've got the old town there which is relatively nice,

As with most coastal towns it was a very popular place for retirement so plenty of old folk.
Like all towns - The good areas of Bexhill are very pleasant, the bad areas are to be avoided.
Eastbourne and Brighton are not too far away, and it has a direct train line to Gatwick/London.
Hastings country park is just a few miles away if you like walking.

If you have any specific questions, please ask away.

Sidley is worth avoiding.

I just checked average house prices for East Sussex.

The ones under 200K are

Bexhill 199K
Eastbourne 198K
Hastings 175K
Newhaven 180K
Peacehaven 191K
St Leonards 151K

So I'd say Bexhill has some of the cheapest housing prices
in East Sussex.

The nearest Motorway to Bexhill is 37 miles to Ashford,
and the second nearest is 49 miles to Crawley, so
for SE England, it's pretty remote.

Perhaps that's reflected in the house prices mentioned above.

dcb - Did you check prcies for houses or properties ?
Hastings, St Leonards and Bexhill have a relatively high percentage of victorian properties converted into flats - these cheaper properties skew the average price.

The road conections down here are pretty if you need to get around quickly, e.g. Hastings to Crawley (50ish miles) can take anywhere between 55 minutes and 2 hours depending on the traffic.

Thanks Guys.

It is further from London than we were planning, but I can handle the train journey as I can do a bit of work on the train. Not being able to get around localy could be problematic though.

Good shout about Hertmonceux Castle - we got married there. biggrin

Doh.

Sure a lot of cheaper properties will bring the averages
down somewhat.

I note with interest that the bottom six in East Sussex are
all coastal towns, presumably, according to your information,
overpopulated with a lot of cheap flats.

I would also suspect that the poor road links wouldn't be a
major problem for retired folks, either, leading to many
retired folks in these towns.

Battle train station goes direct into London.

Bexhill is lovely.

Sidley is a sthole!

If you tell me the street you're thinking about, I'll give you an honest opinion.

Agreed - and the fastest train I could find did
it in 1 hour 22 minutes, which means if you are
a daily commuter and you want to get to London Bridge
at 09.03 am you've got to catch the 07:41 am train.

Opinions vary, but I'd say 2 hours 44 minutes a
day on the train is a lot.

I agree, Bexhills nice enough if a little boring. Shopping etc isn't great but does create a good excuse to take the motor for a drive to find some decent shops wink
Only down fall i suppose is the ghetto smurfs walking round in there little possies!! (i have found that getting the dog to chase them does seem to deter them quite a lot though smile
