I need some ideas for a car to replace my '06 Octavia vRS.

Due to a (some might say foolish) plan to get married in April, I need to raise some funds, and consequently, the Octy is potentially up for the chop.

I need a car for ideally less than £8000 that's going to be reasonably sensible to run (not silly road tax or mpg), yet still fun to drive and not too tiring on the occasional long journey that I have to do.

The cheaper the car, then the more I can afford in terms of performance and running costs, and vice versa. For example, a Fiat 500 1.3 diesel is around £8000 upwards, but costs peanuts to run, whereas an old Subaru might be cheap, but would cost me potentially lots to run.

Ideally, the newer the better, as I would probably keep it for 3 years.

Any constructive comments and ideas gratefully appreciated! smile

I'd say they're probably in the same region as the Octy, but cost a fair bit more to run for not alot more go.

That looks quite savage! I think a little too thirsty for my budget.

I'm ashamed to say I've found a lovely 1.6 TDCi Fiesta on an 57 plate with 12k on the clock for £6990. I know it's only 90 bhp but a remap adds 30 bhp easily. £35 a year to tax and 64 mpg. That's the sort of car I'm after at that end of the budget.

A car like the Audi would be fine if it were £2k to £3k cheaper - then I would be very interested!

Very nice! That's more like it! I'm off out now, so I'll have a proper look at that one later.

The BMW is sweet, but quite old and high in mileage.

The Mondeo is a good shout, although it seems a little pricey for what it is.

TVR. TBH, I'm not a fan of old TVRs, which will probably see me shot down in flames for such a comment. I like the Cerbera and any of the Tuscans, but I need a car to get me to work everyday without any trouble.

The Clio Trophy is also a good call. I'd actually been looking at those, having had a "full fat" 182, but I feel that it would be a retrograde step, going back to a Clio. The new Renaultsports are out of my price range and more expensive to run than the old 182s.

Ultimately, I think whatever I get next has to be cheaper to run than the Octavia. By that I mean more mpg, cheaper insurance and cheaper tax. It's a bit gutting really as I don't want to sell the Octy but needs must. If I don't see something that I like, I might end up with a Fiat 500 1.3 diesel paperbagloser

Noooooooooooooooooo.

All I've been driving for the past month has been diesels (Hire cars) - Losing any go at just over 4.5k rpm is just frown

The mpg is rather good though...After all, I'm used to low 20's! paperbag

Possibly, however they are starting to look quite dated now. Where's the new Fabia vRS though? Skoda missed a trick there really.

I did a bit of research into the Cooper S. It looks like it's less cost effective to run than the Octy, with less power and performance, not to mention dreadful rear passenger room or no real boot to speak of.

The other issue I have is that my car needs 2 new tyres very soon, which obviously I don't want to replace if I'm going to sell it. I'm just not liking many cars out there at the moment either! Arrgggghhhh!!!!!

The Alfa is my favourite choice so far - it looks amazing! I reckon it'll drink more than a chav with a fake id.

The Type R is ok, but I see that it's a Cat D write-off, which always puts me off.

The Golf is a bit more the sort of thing I'm on about, although that one is ever so slightly poverty-spec. The seller claims it has climate control but sadly this is simply not true!
