any ideas how to find air leak on turbo side of engine??

hello all
I have a golf mk4 GTi 1.8 20v turbo (AUM) and keep getting engine light come on after a motorway run,the code says it has a air pressure leak between turbo and engine,i can hear the "woosh" when driving but turbo wont boost when stood still so without rolling road im stumped.have had new dump valve and turbo pressure sensor(standard gen vw),driving me CRAZY.

Check the I/C hose hasnt come off mate.

Check ALL the pipes & hoses for leaks and splits. Apart from the light, any other symptoms?

I've had the tube that runs to the boost pressure sensor leaking before which caused problems. Also a spray of easy start around the engine bay is good for finding leaks, the engine will 'rev up' if you find a leak.

Bring it over sometime, I've got a copy of VAG COM, we'll take a look

Sounds like you have a split in the intercooler pipe, as you say they are right git to diagnose without a rolling road, but i would definatley whip the pipe off and have a good look at it!

thank you,yes have heard people saying before about,easy start,WD40 etc spray and will find leak,yes will drop by soon Rich and you can work your magic while i do mine,have got a snap on thingy that plugs in to turn off light,also got vag com but doesnt work on my mac...arhhhhh

My VAG COM works fine, just used it to help diagnose a faulty temp sensor on a 1.8T engine actually. Whats the code you get?? I'd be suprised if there's a specific one to say "you've got an air leak"

Might make a start with the 1200 this week, if you're ok for Sunday?? Don't forget to get your missus some flowers

That works only if the engine's pulling a vacuum at that location and the point is near enough to the intake for the fluid to enter the combustion chamber. A boost leak may actually seal under vacuum.

£30.00 on a rolling road doesn`t sound too expensive to me for fault finding IMO.

Failing that take the bonnet off and tie a close friend to the wing whilst you WOT it down the road

Its a little more than £30 Jez usually £50,

However, since Gary is a PH'er in need, if he drops me a mail and can come up on a Sat when I have a busy RR day, I will stick it on the dyno for £30 and get Mark to find the boost leak.
