Whilst at Goodwood yesterday we noticed a couple of cars, one being a Ferrari and the other a Bentley with a £950 Tax disk. Seems a hell of alot, I thought they were capped at around £400. We checked the Veyrons and it was only £405. So, does anyone know why these two cars had such expensive tax disks...

I took a photo, reg edited out.

£950 is the first year 'showroom tax' for vehicles with CO2 emissions of >255g/km.

This is a one off tax and only applies to new vehicles. Next year's tax RFL on the vehicle will be less than half of that amount.

Reminds me of dubiously-named Special Car Tax on top of new car prices, reduced then scrapped in the early 90s.

10% on top of VAT - now that's value! Oh no, sorry, my mistake.

When I read the OP I thought maybe the Veyron owner could only afford 6-months tax. hehe

That would explain why his was less than the others!

Some guidelines here but can't see specific mention of imports: Cost of vehicle tax

That's what gets me, if I owned an import Charger or Challenger SRT8 then I'd pay £190, yet my UK car with the same engine is over £400!

Ridiculous sum of money for a 1.6 litre.

Imports don't fall foul of such rules. As they have no official CO2 data (even if there is an equivalent, identical UK model; think Fairlady Z and 350Z here) then they fall into the band of-

Engine size (cc) 12 months rate 6 months rate
Not over 1549 £ 125.00 £ 68.75
Over 1549 £ 205.00 £ 112.75

All low-volume cars fall under the same category. So my father's Seven will be £205 and my MX-5 is £215.
If he had a Koenigsegg he'd pay the same tax as he currently does... wink
