They have just published the 10 most dangerous roads in Britain, death related. I agree number 10 can be dodgy in the hands of the wrong motorist!
A537 Macclesfield to Buxton - Cheshire/Derbyshire
A5012 Pikehall to Matlock - Derbyshire
A621 Baslow to Totley - Derbyshire/South Yorkshire
A625 Calver to Sheffield - South Yorkshire
A54 Congleton to Buxton - Derbyshire
A581 Rufford to Chorley - Lancashire
A5004 Whaley Bridge to Buxton - Derbyshire
A675 Blackburn to Preston - Lancashire
A61 Barnsley to Wakefield - South/West Yorkshire
A285 Chichester to Petworth - West Sussex

Quite suprised to see the A285 Chi - to Petworth there. I'd have thought the A272 would have been higher... It'd be interesting to see the car/motorbike breakdown for the A285 too...

I was surprised about the A285 too - indeed I'd have put money on the A272 being worse.

INTRUDER ALERT, INTRUDER ALERT!!

A272 mate - best driving road in Britain. Although did Snake Pass one winter, -4c roof down, was superb, but prefer the A272 - probably because I know it.

What I'd really like to do - said in a slightly hushed tone, is fit a set of Toyo 888's and get some heat into them across the A272 at about 4.30am on the longest day of the year... Some of those bends would be just stunning.

Or as I like to call it, the most overrated driving road in Britain.

(I've never understood the appeal, it's a totally ordinary and in my opinion, quite boring road. It wouldn't make my top 20 roads in Hampshire, let alone the UK!)

I'm surprised how many of those top 10 are in Derbyshire/Yorkshire. I cut my teeth on many of those roads (some of which are way better than the A272 wink ) and can't say they seemed that dangerous. That was 10 years ago now though.

In the grand scheme of things, I'd agree, it's good, but it's not superb, the best road I've found in the last couple of years is the B743 from Muirkirk to Strathaven... But it's a bloody long way for an early morning blast... The A272 is quite rewarding when it's empty... And you can start to get a rhythm going between the bends, blend in some left foot braking, wide open throttle and some interesting cambers and switchbacks and it's as good as you'll get in the home counties for an A road. All, of course, IMHO.
