Hi,

Bit of a long way off this one, but best to be prepared and all that!

Information here: http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/events/Action_...
and here: http://www.castlecombecircuit.co.uk/events/display...

On the 9th April there’s an action day at Castle Combe. I think the general idea is that owners clubs organise a clubstand to display their cars on, and if desired, get a 15 minute stint on the track for £30. The track sessions are for each owners club as I understand it.

I got wind of this through Briskoda, the Skoda’s owners club, as they’ve organised a clubstand and track time. I’m not interested in tracking my Skoda (it’s a diesel estate!) but I would be keen on tracking the VX220. The Skoda owners club won’t let me take the VX220 on with them, so does anyone know if I can get on the track another way? The VX220 owners club don’t appear to be going.

Anyone from here planning to go, or want to convoy? Last convoy I did to Castle Combe was with the Ferrari owners club with Geoff, which was a great run. Any chance of a PH South Coast clubstand or tracktime session even?

When I've been to the action days in the past, you didn't HAVE to be on a club stand to track it. Just turn up, pay the fee, sit through the safety brief and get on track. The other car park is nearby, you just drive out of that, hang a right and a right and then join the queue.

Best bet would be to ring the organisers (is it still CCC?)

See if you can beat me, I was in a 200bhp 220 Turbo and managed... 75mph down the straight :\

My brakes overheated on the first lap and I had nothing :\ First thing I did when I got home was order some ZS disks and calipers (as they're a lot bigger...). It was frankly embarrassing, managed two corners I think before I lost all braking - on brand new dot5 and just bedded in disks and pads as well!

I will say the dog leg corner at the end of the straight (does it have a name?) is bloody terrifying when you only have engine braking...

Thanks. The brakes were ok on my NA at Combe, but it's a bit lighter and a lot less powerful than the Turbo. I'll be in the stage 3 (charge cooled) VX220 Turbo this time, power thought to be around 270hp so power certainly isn't a problem, brakes, they might be!

Are you going?

Dan,

I used to do those Action Days in my Clio 172 and V6 but stopped. Whilst they do represent good value for money, that also means you tend to get a lot of 'chavs' (for want of a better word) driving 'like they just stole it.' Whilst I have had some fun sessions there, I have also seen some appaling driving and a fair few accidents involving innocent parties. That is why I tend to stay away from these types of pay-on-the-day for short session events and stick to Airfield or full track days. Not saying by any means don't do it, just a word of warning. I would consider doing it on the day if the standard of driving was ok and I was able to get out with the right group. I once did a session which was the Skyline and Cosworth owners clubs and found it less than fun with people trying to prove their mark with aggresive driving. My Clio V6 once tried to kill me up there (read: I ran out of talent) resulting in a tank-slapper, a lot of tyre smoke and oppo, and me sitting in the field for a couple of minutes catching my breath. Avon Rise and Quarry always make for good entertainment and have culled many a car over the years.

If you are going to head up let me know as it is certainly a cracking drive up and if the weather is good makes for a fun day out. I will be trying to do quite a few airfield and track days this summer in the VXT- so if you fancy doing any let me know (and anyone else from the SC massive).

Cheers

DC.

DC,

How are you? Thanks for your message. All taken onboard. I've only done one track day at Castle Combe and that was on a Friday before Japfest. They opened the track for people who wanted to have a run round before the main event. It was great as there were only about 7 or 8 cars on the track and as I started halfway through a lap I had the whole circuit to myself. I'm certainly not keen on tracking it with people who have something to prove.

I'll certainly let you know if I go and as you say, will probably judge whether or not to track by the standards on the day.

I'd be up for some airfield runs if you could let me know when you're going.

Danyeates - I should add it was a Rover 220 Turbo - so 262mm single pots, I'm sure the VX is leagues better wink

I'll also echo what DC has said - part of the reason I never got it back on at CC was because every time I went (which used to be quite a bit with Rovertech) the standard of driving seemed way below what I'd be prepared to mix with in my car. Sometimes it's good, sometimes it's bad, need to judge it on the day really.

ive done quite a few trackdays at combe, and as above you always get bellends who cant drive or have a faster car than talent allows or seem to think they are exempt from rules. just be smooth, and constantly check mirrors
