It's gone a bit mad hasn't it???

I'm trying to insure my diesel Skoda, it's not a sports car, it's not worth that much and I don't do very many miles and I'm not getting anything much under £800. I don't mind spending lots of money to insure a high power car, but a 2.0 litre diesel it seems way over the top.

I'm 26 in a couple of week so I'm insuring it from then, got full NCB (9 years) and a completely clean license with no points, convictions or claims! I was expecting it to be around £450-500. I'm getting a bit hacked off.

My boat is insured for £30,000 and that costs me £250, and that covers me for £3m worth of third party damage, meaning I can crash into a Sunseeker and not really worry about it. Likewise, my house insurance covers me for any individual item either at home or away up to the value of £4,000 without having to disclose it when taking out the policy. So my mountain bike (worth nearly £4k) could be stolen and I'd be fine, with NO EXCESS!! That cost me £400.

£800 with a huge excess and limited mileage with my clean license seems mad to me.

That does sound excessive. Have you tried Admiral?

Also put your old or someone on as a named driver, that usually brings the premium down.

Admiral were £845! Yes, I have my mum on the policy which brought the price down a bit to that price.

I had this same issue last year with the RS. It was the same price to insure the RS6 as it would have been to insure a 2003 2.5tdi C5 A6 Avant. I think its all down to the make of car. VW/Skoda/BMW/Ovlov etc all have pricey parts so repairs are never cheap. If you had a VXR8 or Monaro you would see an insurance premium lower than a BMW 330d as the parts are cheaper and more readily available.

Just my 2p.

Admiral are great if you do a multicar or single car for the 1st year but shaft you in the second with 50% hikes. However you should try Elephant. Same company as Admiral but they do respond better to bartering. Im with Elephant on the M5.

Swiftcover were cheapest (by about £150+) for both cars I`ve insured recently.. Spoke to both a-plan and adrian flux and they both said that they could get nowhere near the same price.. Expecting to royally shafted on the renewals though!

If you use quidco you can get £28 cashback for buying direct from swiftcover.com biggrin

I'm with Admiral multicar and I'm pretty sure that I'm not paying much more than that to insure two cars!

Second year with Admiral Multicar. 26 with 0 points (touch wood), 4 years NCB, E36 328 Sport and VX220 Turbo - circa £700. 5000 miles on each. That's about £70 down on last year. Suits me sir.

Tried Tesco's Dan?

Directline seem to have had a dose of the mental too, the insurance on my Honda has gone from £400ish to nearly £700, that's with 8 years no claims on a car worth 25p. It is group 16 insurance, but this is just ludicrous.

I'd agree they have insured my GT3 & RRS for the last few years. I think I'm paying the same now as when I stated with them 5yrs back. They took the piss one year on the RRS, but as soon as I spoke to them on the phone premium came back down again.

However I'm now in the process of switching to a multi-car policy with Chaucer.

Tesco won't even insure me!! I did add my girlfriend onto the policy so maybe it's because she has a claim.

Chaucer should be reasonable there the underwriters on my mini policy, as I'm not directly with them. The car is very modified all is all declared etc I've also got limited track cover too which could be useful if you track the gt3
