I need to start playing again. Anywhere in the Ringwood area worthy of a recommendation? Don't like pay & plays as a 6hr round offends me! Crane Valley & Bramshaw look OK from the websites.

Bramshaw has two courses, the main benefit being that you can always get a start, even if the tees on one of the courses are booked.

The Manor is parkland, is in very good nick (generally free from New Forest ponies and the like) and is a tough test off the back sticks.

The Forest is as nature intended and is normally a cracking course to play. Unfortunately, it's in a bit of a sorry state at the moment. A lot of this is down to a dispute between the club and a local farmer. The farmer, in an attempt to 'reinforce' his point of view, has been encouraging his livestock to use the fairways on their route back to the cattle sheds. This has effectively rendered the 1st and 2nd holes as unplayable for the past few months.

Add into the mix English Heritage who are pushing to return the area around the Forest course to natural wetland (which means the infilling of all main-made drainage), and no one really knows what the future holds for the oldest club in Hampshire.

If you were thinking of joining as a full 7 day member, I think it's about £980 per annum and you should be able to push for a decent deal on the joining fee (if they charge any fee at all).

I'm a member at Knighton Heath (Wallisdown, Bournemouth). It's a members owned club so there are very few general public who use it. The odd society, competition and match but other than that it's real easy to just turn up and play. If you're on your own, you should be able to get a game with someone. Worth considering - I pay £70 per month for full 7 day membership. You will need to be "played in".

I used to play regularly but haven't done for a while now though. Strictly pay and play for me though, can't afford membership fees, especially not if I only play once or twice a year.

Waterlooville would also be the closest club to me but I seem to remember it being quite pricey.

iford gold centre is a pretty good place to go. Its near the little down centre on the outskirts of bournemouth, tucked behind the back of Tesco bournemouth.

Its not that bad, £25 on the weekend with a member i think and £20 in the week.
