Hello people,

I’ve listed my boat up for sale seeing as Spring is coming but as I work in the marine trade, I’m very aware of the amount of thefts that occur when a boat is in storage. If the boat is advertised, it’s inviting people over to look at it, check the house over and see if it’s easy to steal so I’d like to make it as difficult as possible!

The boat is currently in a large garage/workshop behind the house on a busy stretch of road. The drive is gated and locked and there is CCTV so it’s pretty secure. The boat also can’t get out of the garage without having to modify the trailer and fold down the console (which takes a very long time) as it’s too tall to fit under the garage door, it’s also behind a car in the garage so it’s pretty much impossible to steal. However, I’m aware that it’s not very often the boats are stolen, it’s more likely the engines and electronic equipment. We’re talking about £4,000 of electronic equipment and a £15,000 engine so a lot of money.

So, without sounding too off putting on the advert, what would you say?

I’ve so far put this on the bottom of the advert…

“Please note, the boat is stored in a secure, alarmed workshop in Hampshire behind our house, which is also monitored by CCTV. The trailer is currently disabled in the workshop and is behind several cars to prevent theft. Viewings must be arranged in advance but we can accommodate most times of the day. I’m afraid that due to the sharp increase in marine theft, photographic ID and proof of address must be provided when viewing the boat. Serious enquiries only please. Lots more photos available on request.“

But I’m not sure if it sounds a bit stern and strict! I don’t want to put people off, but I don’t want to have anything stolen! Also, am I giving too much away by talking about the security, or is it enough to put off a potential thief?

Thanks,

Dan

It reads ok to me, seems you have all security bases covered, although I might be put off by the photo-id and address bit. What you said before that haswould put me off trying to nick anything.

Yeah, that's what I'm not sure about. Should I maybe wait until they contact me and then ask them to bring copies of ID, or not bother asking them at all?

Thing is, people get funny about ID, although what you'd have to gain from knowing who they are I'm not sure. Personally, I'd leave the request off, and get a feel for them over the phone, you can generally tell wasters a mile off.

What I'm trying to say is, if there are 2 boats similar for sale and one is requiring proof of ID and address etc. then they may just go look at the other one.

Listen to me.....I know cock all about boats. rolleyes

Ha! Well, I'll probably end up buying a house, but if a nice 2 seater sports car came around, I could postpone buying a house for a while!

I'm a broker by trade so I sell boats all day long, but all the boats I sell are locked in our yard which is security guarded at night and locked with large spikey gates and fences so we've never had anything stolen. I don't tend to deal with boats offsite, but I do deal with insurance claims on a regular basis from people that have had things stolen from their boat whilst it's at home. I don't want to keep the boat at work as it's outside, I much prefer it undercover in the workshop.

I just didn't want to put off any potential purchaser with my security concerns!

Arn't boats designed to get wet?

At the yard would be a much better proposition for your sale. For one thing it's not easy viewing something like that in the back of a garage. People want to stand back and have a look at its overall size, lines and shape.

Yes, well I may well do that yet. It's just I'd rather keep selling my personal boat separate from my work for several reasons.

If you are in the marine trade, i would have thought you could easily identify genuine buyers from the fender kickers! some really basic questions will find them out easily!
I'm sure you know this, but if you make yours a little more difficult to move/steal the crim will move onto the next one!
I just take the wheels of my tailer and block it off! any valuables are removed! all the useual things!

I don't see it being any different to the precautions you take when selling a car!

Good luck with the sale! Looks like a nice rib! I very nealy sold mine last year, but pleased i kept it! Great fun especially when you get a bit of weather like this!

It is a lovely RIB but I'm 26 now and should be looking at buying a house I suppose! Seen some really nice places in Milford on Sea and Keyhaven. It's too much money for me to have tied up in a boat really. It worries me when I take it out, I don't want to damage it or anything so I find I can't relax and enjoy myself. Once it sells I'll need to make a decision, sell the car and use the boat and car money buy a house, or sell the car and use the car and boat money to buy a much better car (and maybe a small cheap boat!)

I've decided to bring it into work now anyway. It's secure here and will get more exposure. Here's the advert via the work website: http://uk.boats.com/listing/dealer_boat_details_nh...

I just wanted to know if you thought my original advert was a little off-putting. I think it seems it is. Best to have it moved into work and not have to worry about it.

I'd have an A4 advert printed up and post it around to the yacht clubs around the solent! There is always someone looking for a Rib and 6M is a pretty good all round size!

I have a Ribtec 6m with a DF115 , which is big enough to get around the solent , but small enough that it can be towed behind a reasonable sized car and also live on my driveway in the winter! This means I can keep an eye on it and i'm also not being charged like a wounded bull for winter storage!

I'm sure if you can sell it for good money and sure you could find something similar ( maybe not quite as plush) for half the money!

Good luck again!
