Pub with food, between Southampton and Ringwood

A mate is staying in Southampton next week and we're going to meet up for a beer and a bite. Anyone suggest any pubs that serve decent food and good beer (Real Ale) around the half way mark, about Cadnam or so?

I can think of The Green Dragon at Brook (or is it Bramshaw?) or the King Rufus at Eling (never been here but it is Good Beer Guide listed).

The Red Lion in Boldre is a good local pub, local Sway Butchers meat and game, local fish and local ales. Bit out of the way though.

That looks good for me at the Ringwood end, but probably a little far from S'ton.

High Corner Inn at Linwood (nr. Ringwood), but guessing thats a little too far one way too, but you do get to drive along Ornamental Drive to get there, which is a treat in itself

How about Pub Club destination 'Empress OF Blandings' just outside Cadnam. After last years Pub Club meet the wife and i have visited a few times and the Grub is excellent, can't comment on the real ale but really nice pub anyway.

Yeah, I enjoyed the Pub Club there.

I only ate the olives and had a lager, but they were very nice! Olives were excellent!

Sir Walter Tyrell at the Rufus stone.
Queens head at Burley.

Or if you can forgoe the beer, try the Station House on the corner of the A35 and the Burley road. A tea room, but the food is very good.

Meh, I still remember when the local council closed it down for food hygine reasons.
Mind you, this was around the time that Howards Way was still being shot...

for the past 4 years now i use it every summer. sit out on the jetty, good food and good beer.

The Green Dragon, at Brook fits your criteria well. Plus it's close to the M27 junction and easy to find with plenty of parking.

I've eaten there 3 times and it has been reasonably priced and tasty every time. Save room for one of their deserts.

Thanks for the replies; I do know some of the pubs (The Shoot and the High Corner) but they are probably a little far from my pal's base. Some of the others that I don't know I will give a try in the future.

I think for practicality it may be The Green Dragon or The Empress.

How about the Sir John Barleycorn next to Junc 1 of the M27.
Have not been there for a while but used to serve great food.

The Alice is OK - a bit variable, but generally OK. Matt is right though, it is biased more towards me.

Haven't been to the Barleycorn for ages either.
