Vehicle trackers
Discussion
Before you leg it off to spend your hard earned reddies you need to answer these questions:
Does your insurance require it? Some do, so if yes feel free to fit one. But be very thorough in your research. If its not a requirment, read on.
Does the cost of fitting of the tracker and cost of subscription work out to be less than the reduction in insurance premium? I had a tracker fitted to my RS6 and at the time it was a requirment so I had no choice. I then bought my M5 and it too had a tracker fitted. I phoned tracker to see how much a years protection (lol) was and it was somewhere in the region of 150 notes per year. No worries I said but let me just check how much it will save me on my insurance. The answer was 35 quid. So, was it worth spending the subscription charge? No! If your car is nicked you'll get the money / car back regardless.
Do you really want your car back if its nicked? So, your house / car gets broken into and the theiving t
ts make off with your pride and joy. Without any time to warm up, your car is bouncing off the limiter in every gear. Your dash, boot liner, carpets and rear seats are all getting pulled up to see if you have a tracker installed. Swerving and speeding to make good progress your car is probably picking up minor knocks and scrapes. Then the police catch up with the thieves (unlikely even if you have a tracker) and your car becomes a demolition darby toy. After all this, assuming its not burnt out, would you really be glad to see it back? I wouldn't. Are your insurance going to be sympathetic when the gearbox needs a rebuild or the engine gives up 2 weeks later? No! They will only repair cosmetic damage.
So, are you still keen to get a tracker? There's more doom and gloom to follow:
Trackers with gps, hf, vhf and uhf bands are very easily jammed. Theives can buy jammers off fleabay and just plug them into your cars lighter socket. Mobile phone band trackers etc are also pretty easy to jam but even so, most thieves know exactly where the techs fit them so 99% of the time the devices are ripped out and filed under 'bin'. Also, if your car is driven straight under hard cover or into a shipping container its nigh on impossible to track anyway.
As I've said, if its a genuine insurance must then phone up Tracker UK and ask for a club discount. With the lack of performance car sales currently they are offering all sorts of deals. If its not needed then save the cash and buy a very good alarm / immobiliser unit and some lockable posts for your driveway.
