Evening All

This is the first 'real' time I have had to ask the PH massive for some in depth advice! I am hoping it proves as helpful as ever!

My dad is being relocated for a six month business contract (possibly longer) in the Leeds area and is thinking of renting a flat up there.

His main work base will be in Huddersfield and he will travel regularly to Halifax and Wakefield. He will travel up weekly from the South by the the M1 and may possibly use Leeds / Bradfield airport in and this could be taken into account in terms of location.

He is keen to get some information on the best areas (along with areas to strongly avoid) to be based for easy access to work and for entertainment in the evenings. He is very much into acoustic music and regularly perfoms at open mic evenings closer to home, he is also car mad (why he isn't on here himself I don't know), so information on these sort of events / meetings is also welcome.

He is not sure if he would be better in the centre or a suburb of Leeds, possibly further out. Does anyone have any advice on commuting between these areas!?

Any advice / information is greatfully received as he is starting from scratch! He will be starting his contract this coming Monday, so if any one attends singer/songwriter open mic evenings and can show him the way, I am sure he'll buy a pint or two for you!

I am hoping this thread can show him the power of the internet and finally get him registered on here! In the meantime, thank you for your help in advance!

There are Plenty of Flats in the Centre of Leeds and the Night life is pretty varied. Mostly it's youth oriented but there are a few places tilted to the older/live music crowd. Avoid being too close to Holbeck on the City centre limits. Parts of the area are a little "seedy". There again places like the Grove behind Bridgewater Place are pretty good for live Music. It's a case of "knowing" the area.

Apart from the Centre South of Leeds Rothwell and some of it's surrounding Villages are good, especially for Local Pub's and food. I've heard good things about Garforth,(Home of Ginetta), and even Morley in certain parts. Tong is a nice village with a "upmarket" reputation and a local "scene" although it may be a little too quiet and itis on the outskirts of Bradford. Handy for the M62 so easy to get to Leeds ,Wakefielsd and Halifax.

North Leeds is also a good bet. Headingley is a Student Area but the further out you go the better. Horsforth is a strange mix but with good evening entertainment. It does have a Student element with the Trinity College of LLeeds Uni on the way to the Airport. That's the rub with Horsforth as the Planes do get a bit low the closer you get to it. Chapel Allerton is good to be close to as again it has a good mix of housing and the centre around Harrogate Road has a lot of Restaurants and Bars. Moortown and further out tends to be quieter. However Roundhay, Street Lane and the area above the "Clock" and around the Park are also lively in a more "grown up" way.

Worth looking at but a bit further out is Guiseley as is Yeadon and Otley but all have a Lively evening life and again easy access to the country with good driving roads and spectacular scenery.

Transport to North Leeds is pretty good as are road links and don't forget it's easy to get out in to the country. From the Centre and North you can use the Inner Ring Road to get around the centre. The Armley Gyratory gets busy but it flows unless there is an accident or breakdown. Going the other way is as easy as well. Once on the M621 Wakefield and Halifax are about 10 and 30 mins away.

Areas to avoid, Woodhouse and Burley, too close to the Universities and too many Students. Kirkstall can be okay and the closer to the Abbey you are the Better. It is a bit close in parts to the Hawkswood Estate which is worth avoiding. Meanwood is patchy, nice in parts but the industrial bits where new accommodation is been built seems to attract some problems. Don't go near Little London or the surrounding area. Harehills and Chapeltown are not worth looking at. Don't look to closely around St James Hospital or Seacroft/Whinmoor. Too many bad "Council" type tenants.

Hope that helps and if you or your Dad knows somebody in a decent area I'd see what you think about where they are.

Then I would suggest he uses Huddersfield as a base. That would make him quite central for access to Halifax and Wakefield, and close the the M62 as well.

It's quite a journey from Leeds to Huddersfield, even down the M62 - or even the M621 (during peak times).

If he cares about nightlife, then Leeds maybe..

My thoughts exactly Tony. If he needs to be in Huddersfield regularly he will find the commute from Leeds a pain. Not far in distance but a real bottle neck in rush hour.

And if he's travelling from South to North I suggest the A1 or a good book.
