Went out with the family and decided to visit Lotherton Hall as not been for a while.

We sit in a 10 minute traffic queue - no way to get out once in there to find they've upped the entrance fee from <£4 per car to £5 per adult....utter, utter bstds. Didn't pay, drove straight out and went to temple newsham.

What a load of old bks that is, sign of the times I suppose but I'm not paying £10 to get in to see some fancy pidgeons...rubbish. I hope they start to lose serious revenue and realise thay might need to adjust the price to reflect the decidely averageness of their attraction.

Try Newby Hall near Boroughbridge. Absolutely brilliant for children. It has a superb adventure playground with moat with mini pedalos, tarantella water feature, hand operated ferry boat, all sorts.

Plus the cafe is nice, beautiful gardens and a cool passenger mini steam train.

A family of four annual pass is £55. Bargain, we use it loads smile

Park in the entrance to the field that's more or less under the M1...

Follow the path into the back entrance of one of the long walks. Free.

We've also been recommended to visit Beningborough Hall

It apparently has a very good children's wilderness adventure play area if that's of any interest to your family.

We will be visiting in the next couple of months. £19 for family of four.

Is Lotherton Hall National Trust? Pricey visiting anywhere like that if you're not a member - as we found out last year at Nostell Priory. Spent the money on about 60 miles worth of petrol instead laugh

Benningborough is National Trust as is Fountains Abbey /Brimham Rocks etc in the same area

Newby Hall is part of the HHA - might be worth looking at membership of that - covers about 300 properties. Slightly more than a season ticket for Newby on its own.

I know loads of people that are complaining about Lotherton Hall. Shame as I think its much better than say Roundhay Park.

Another Newby Hall fan. There's a nice selection for the kids

Also there's a Cars in the Park event there on 19th May. I'm gonna head there with the little one if the weather is nice

Lotherton Hall is Leeds council and they are embarking on a large scale improvement program this year, trying to elevate the place from a park to a tourist destination. I honestly believe that LH has been extremely cheap for many years.

I have no connection with LH other than this years Porsche Club concours is moving there from Harewood this year, August 5th put it in your diaries.

Well to be fair if they do make dramatic improvements then fair enough, maybe.

The issue is the sudden an unannounced increase without actually improving anything first. It would make more sense to fund whatever changes they propose by other means and then recover that through increased gate prices when the cost actually reflects the quality of the attraction.

I agree, when we met up with them for the first time I was surprised, it is a very popular venue, no doubt helped by the cheap parking prices. It was one of those places that I used go with my lad after school on a Friday because is close and was cheap.

There is always the danger with the upgrade that they loose the business out of weekends and school holidays, but I don't know if they will have a membership scheme which would make sense.

We went last week - Wasnt that bothered about the entrance fee to be honest
But we had something to eat in the cafe which cost £20 and the good wasnt that good
Pretty piss-poor to sum up

Tropical Butterfly House near Sheffield is pretty good just get there early, the car is tiny and it fills up quick.

Leeds Uni summer ball was there last year, I had wondered why it wasnt there again this year, i'm guessing the prices they were asking had gone up.

I didn't even realise you had to pay to get in those places, and I'm local to Harewood House and localish to Lotherton. Shows how long it's been since I went to either! hehe In fact I think I was still in my teens when I last went to LH and was probably still in single figures when I last went to HH even though it's on my doorstep. I've always been tempted to take a drive in to HH via the entrance at the lights as it's always open - no gate etc; so how far would I get before being turned round? Are the prices just for the house or do you have to pay for driving into the grounds as well?

The ticket hut is about 500 yards along the drive. Yes, you have to pay to get into the grounds. It has a good adventure playground if you have small children.

Where's that? LH or HH? I don't have kids, the only reason I was going to go in was to use the backdrop for some nice car piccies.
