Owdo chaps,

Me and the good lady have been speaking and the desire to move up north is getting stronger by the day.

We're a young family and into cars so we're looking for somewhere friendly, pleasant and not a complete stehole!

When we come back up north, I'll be looking to finish my photography degree so ideally near to a university and preferably a hospital within a few miles (missus is a nurse)

What are your recommendations?

York would take some beating - has Uni & Hosp for you. Live a bit outside & commute in by train/cycle if possible. Lots of suitable rented accomodation being overwhelmed & spoilt by multi occupation student lets.
Spend driving time on the wolds.

Very best of luck!

I was born in Harrogate but when I met Sarah she couldnt drive. I never thought I'd move away from my home town but now live in Halifax. Always had the impression it was a st hole but, if you chose your location correctly, its actually a really nice place to live. Some nice countryside within walking distance, nice people and cracking for pretty much anywhere in Yorkshire/Manchester to commute.

I'd personally look North of York. Sutton-on-the-forrest, Sheriff Hutton, Stillington, Crayke, Easingwold, and a bit further north but closer to the epic Photogenic scenary and driving roads, Helmsley, Ampleforth, Harome, Oswaldkirk, Hovingham, and Terrington.

If you enjoy morning hoons, photography and walking and mountain biking, I'd look at Ampleforth, Helmsley, Harome, or Oswaldkirk as they sit at the foot of the NY Moors. From these spots to York is circa 40-50 minutes depending on traffic. The first few in the list are 20-30 mins to to York.

York and surrounds.

Uni/Hospital, NY Moors for hooning, NY one of very few counties with no fixed scameras.

Main line train back to the smoke if needed.

History, architecture, not far to the coast or dales, the list goes on.

Another vote for York.

Good Uni and hospital, great restaurants, bars and pubs, loads of lovely villages round about and good road and rail links.

Also half an hour from Leeds, twenty mins from NY Moors and 40 mins from seaside smile

Have been looking at NY as opposed to west this time, but there's a lot to think about.

It's going to be two years as I'm just about to start my degree and the missus completes hers next year.

I'm so happy that she wants to move North, I do miss Yorkshire

90% of Halifax is just an extension of Bradford, same for the surrounding areas, Brighouse, Birstall, Batley, Dewsbury, Huddersfield etc. censored, if not then you'll feel like an outsider.

Pretty much most of North Leeds (outside the ring road) is decent, but you'll pay for it. Calverley, Horsforth, Rawdon, Adel, Bramhope, Lawnswood, Otley, Ilkley, Alwoodley, Shadwell are all sound areas, although parts of Holt Park, Tinshill and Moortown/Moor Allerton are a bit scummy, some parts of Yeadon and Guiseley too. Mate of mine rents a place in the next street to me here in Adel and he's paying £450 per month for a 1 bed flat (excl all bills). Ultra quiet here though, semi-rural, never any boy racers to heard with their loud exhausts or booming stereos hehe, and never had any trouble at all in all the years I've lived here.

If you're considering Leeds at all then feel free to PM me about any areas you're considering. I've lived in Leeds virtually all my life so know the good and bad bits pretty well. spin

Just noticed you mentioned the university requirement - Leeds fits that bill and most of the areas I've mentioned. Headingley is okay too, but student central for the most part which commands quite high rents. Property is expensive too as they get a lot of BTL interest for obvious reasons.

+ 1 billion

I just found this area as somewhere to automotively meditate. It is also startlingly beautiful in places (Sheriff Hutton and Hovingham get my vote). I would imagine these could be a little pricey to rent in?

Have a look around Malton/Pickering.

Stunning scenery around The North York moors.

Within (reasonable) travelling distance of York, Thirsk, Scarborough, Whitby.

Further south, Hebden Bridge/Halfax/Huddersfield.

Another vote for York - I work in York and live about 20-30 minute out - Very nice modern 2 bedroom house with garden and parking is £495/month - all bills will be lower out of York itself, such as car insurance and council tax. I am right on the edge of the Wolds, so there roads and scenery are stunning and the NY Moors are only 20 minutes away... No other City is a beautiful or has the scenery and surrounding pretty villages (up this way) that York offers.

Not really. There's a bit of a divide in that respect. Expensive or very reasonable mainly because there is zero industry around this area. The population are either quite wealthy and commute or work away, or are average wage and below earners as the jobs that are available locally don't tend to pay that well. You can rent some lovely little cottages / flats for very reasonable rates if you look carefully.

Like I say, by the time we come back, Jem will be a band 5 (I think) Nurse and I'll have just completed my higher national diploma and heading into degree and hopefully making a modest living out of it...hopefully

Another vote for York. Agree with other poster, it's great but it's expensive in comparison to other areas.

Also has great connections via the East Coast main line. Good line for getting down to London quickly.

I'm between Leeds and York but closer to Leeds. My Son is studying Audiology at Leeds and is doing Placements at Hospitals around the area. Leeds Uni and Leeds Met are ridiculously close to Leeds General Infirmary and St James is "on the Way" from most points of North Leeds. He also does Motorcycle Trials and getting to the Dales, Moors and Pennines is pretty easy. Even roads close into Leeds and between Leeds, Selby, York and Harrogate can be pretty entertaining. Horsforth is popular as you can get into Leeds quickly and it's also close to good roads out to Otley and Ilkley. Lively evening scene as well.

Bradford is also good providing you stay out of the centre and it does have the Bradford Royal Infirmary and it's own Uni although they are a bit close to areas that can be a little "disconcerting" .

Malton could be ok, although i'd imagine it's a place where everyone knows your business.

York is lovely, heading out of York towards Hull can also mean cheaper prices (i'm assuming it will directly affect rent) so Pocklington and Market Weighton could be good?
