Hi everyone, just wanted to know please as to whether or not there are any cameras within the West Yorkshire area that are multi purpose and can measure speed & red light offences. Reason being, is that I've seen a few cameras like this, but initially thought that they were for red light offences only. After reading a bit more about these cameras, I have realised that they can also be used for speeding.
The camera manufacturer is RedSpeed. They are also known as monitron cameras and are also known as RedGuard or SpeedCurb. They are usually yellow. Also, if the camera is measuring speed, are there any legal requirements for signs saying "speed cameras" ?
One final question and that is do they flash ?

Thanks smile

I think there's one at Sheepscar junction in Leeds. It's when you come off the inner ring road and come off to go towards Harrogate road.

I think it can measure your speed too, because it has marks on the road to measure your speed just like a Gatso has markings on the road.

Those speed lines appeared about 2 weeks ago. Really hoping they're not speed cameras as well now.

Yes the camera does speed and red light.

WARNING The red light part will flash you if you set off on amber, must wait for green light and do not cross white line..

These cameras will or should have warning notices before you approach them.

Play safe.

I use this road every day and this camera flashed me the other night which I found very bizarre because the lights were most definitely on green when I went through.

I havent received anything through the post yet but i'm a bit unhappy that the camera is now being used for speed checks without any prior warning or notice. The same signs are displayed stating 'Traffic Signal Cameras' with the camera logo so does anyone know if is that all that's required to cover red light and speed?

I also noticed tonight that there is a new 30 speed limit sign which has appeared on the right hand side of the junction.

As far as I'm aware councils don't need to give any prior warnings to a cameras location. It's only a voluntary recommendation that they put up signs and paint them yellow, it is not a requirement.

The only thing that is a requirement is the correct signage for the speed limit, which could explain the newly erected sign.

Message for Stub101.
I have also been flashed at those same set of lights. It was green and I didn't know they had recently changed it to a speed camera so i'm frantically worried I will receive a letter, have you received anything as yet? I was going fairly fast too and already have points so could be in danger of losing my licence. I thought that camera was just a traffic light camera but i noticed those lines that weren't there before. Can anyone shed any light on this please? The waiting game is awful! Thanks

Hi Doodus12 - your situation is exactly the same as mine and I think it's very cheeky of them to lower the speed limit to 30mph without putting up new speed limit advisory signs, especially on a 3-lane carriageway.

I still haven't received a NIP yet so I'm hoping there is some grace period with it being new. I can't remember exactly when I got flashed but it will be around 2 weeks ago so I'm hoping the 14 day limit applies and the NIP cannot be enforced.

I've started warning everyone I know who uses that piece of road and they have all been taken aback that the camera now does speed as well as red light, especially given its location.

Does anyone know if it's possible to complain or challenge the location/appropriateness of a camera???

I use that junction everyday and the new 30 speedlimit sign's, one on each side of the road, are about 25 yards before the speedcamera. I now brake when going down the hill and cars almost go up the back of me and fly past either side, some of whom must get flashed!

It's definitely an unfair positioning of the 30 signs, they should be further up the hill AND also perhaps should have 30 painted on the tarmac. Bizarrely it's 40 going up the hill on the other side of the carriageway.

Apparently they have put a new 30mph speed limit sign, I can't say I noticed it but I haven't driven down that road since I got flashed. I used to use it all the time but I don't anymore. It was at the weekend so I won't know yet if I have been caught but I have been worrying about as I already have 6 points and I think I was going pretty fast as it was late. Yes I very much there is some grace period! Yes they do have to send you something within 14 days so it's sounds like you will be ok. Do you know what speed you were going?

Yeah I've told everyone at work too and will be telling all my friends!

Stub101, it's been a week for me and I have not received anything as yet, have you? I'm still worried as I was going pretty fast but hoping if I get through this week it will be more than 14 days and I should be ok.

Hope all you guys get away without a fine. The problem with all cameras is that the police will say :You must have been breaking the laws in force on that section of road to get a fine:

This is true but it still dont seem rightfurious

Keep us updated about Sheepscar please. I don't often come that way these days but I know that pretty much everyone does 50 down that hill, (myself included) so would be useful to know if it is a speed camera or just a pretend one. Are you saying it's now a 30 limit down the hill to the lights as well? That's just BS if so; no reason for that whatsoever. Good wide 3 lane d/c with good visibility and already a red light cam there so what's the purpose of the speed cam apart from to solely generate revenue? mad 40 was fine.

No 30 starts about 25 yards before the speed camera. The whole of Sheepscar junction is now 30mph no matter which direction you approach it from.

Could do with the white painted 30 rings on the road as well.

Hello All

I was reading the thread with interest and wondered if any of the posters have
received a NIP yet?

I went through the lights at green this morning doing approx 36 and am now panicking!

I didn't realise the camera had changed to red signal and speed camera.

Regards

Lee

Just to update things it has now been over 3 wks since I was flashed by this camera so I am hoping I am fine.

I have to say that I agree 100% with appropriately sited speed cameras but this one really takes the mickey and is blatantly there to generate revenue. It is virtually impossible (and wholly inappropriate IMO) to do 30mph on that downhill stretch of 3 lane dual carriageway. I may also add that the new 30 signs are placed almost in front of the new combined camera and in traffic in the middle lane they cannot be seen at all!

I genuinely feel that there is a case to challenge the appropriateness of the current setup but I have no idea how to do this or whether it is even possible. My assumption is that there have been a large number of red light violations caught which has triggered them to instal the speed camera, however I maintain that it is not appropriate at all for that section of road.

I have warned everyone I know and have had the same reaction from every single person.

Any ideas how something can be done about it?

Um thanks Stu, but there's approximately 3 weeks of reading there. Can you summarise your/the points please?
