Hey guys, I come back with Lady LaRohne in a couple of weeks and she's never seen a forrest, I know the weather is probably going to be terrible, but I want to take her somewhere extremely scenic for a walk, I can't think of any spectacular forrested areas off hand and there must be some in Yorkshire,

Any and all advice appreciated!

Dalby is good, head to Thornton Le Dale (between Pickering and Scarborough) and then follow signs for Dalby. There is a forest drive (it is a toll but over winter it is much reduced) and all sorts of walks.

Dalby is nice, Bridestones walk imparticular (park near the lake) is a nice short, but sedately challenging walk.

Also not properly forest, but Brimham Rocks/Pately Bridge offers some lovely walking, some of which is forest walking smile

3 Miles further towards Scarborough is Allerston. The track beside the pub runs into Dalby. Walk your socks off and end up back at the pub. thumbup

Snowing up here today too - well last night. You might get a proper winter scene if you're lucky.

hahaha, very witty. Thank god this isn't in the lounge or it would be about 5 pages long with photoshops by now.

WTF have you changed your name to Holroyd! hehe

As most have said, Dalby Forest. Do you want an absolute spankingly good hotel to spend a night/couple of days up there?

Book in to the Feversham Arms and Verbena Spa at Helmsley here

Then book dinner at the Michelin Star rated Star at Harome TheStaratHarome

On your way up you can go via White Horse Bank, stunning views from the top.

From Helmsley, DalbyForest is about 10-15 mins drive.

Big enough forest for you? smile

Check the pool is open though if you consider The Feversham Arms. They were cleaning it last weekend.

Good call (as a local I'm biased I suppose), but I'd suggest swapping the Star for the Pheasant - same owner (Andy Perns) but a lot (me included) prefer the food at the Pheasant at the moment. Surroundings are nicer too being more country hotel than pub, and the food is less complicated but cooked to perfection. The Pheasant is in Harome.

The Fev does good food too - a friend is the Head Chef - but I have to say I much prefer the Pheasant's ambience TBH.

If I only I'd known, I'd have invited you out for an early morning pedal. Ground was solid water ice, so tough going, and we had a couple of tumbles, but a good morning ride out. If you're ever back, bring your road bike and do the Bransdale Loop. Perfect morning road route to work up a craving for a Hotel full English.

Just jumping on this thread. We're staying at the Feversham his Sunday & Monday night.

Mrs Overheads is 7 months pregnant and has an aversion to the cold so long walks in a forest are out.

What other things are there to do/see in the area? Particularly places to go for a nice pub lunch/dinner - Star Inn etc look too posh grub for us - thinking upmarket pub not Michelin Stars. Or a decent curry/thai/italian?

You can come and have a play on my son's new trampoline if you wish - I'm just round the corner from the Fev biggrin

The Blackswan Hotel has a nice bar / and lounge area. It tends to be busier and has more of a buzz than the Fev as the bar there can be a little quiet. Food is ok, but there are better and cheaper. Good for drinks though.

If you want country pub within walking distance for just a drink try The Feathers - my local - but whilst they do a superb Sunday lunch, the bar food is overpriced and distinctly average. You'd be better doing the short drive to the Royal Oak at Nunnington, which is superb pub food at reasonable prices; their Steak Pie is simply brilliant.

The Italian in Helmsley is nothing to write home about, but the new Indian is very very nice, although a little tatty interior wise, as is the one at Norton Beadlam (a five minute drive away), which is also a much nicer venue.

Another very very good pub, which is reasonably priced for the standard of food, is the Hare Inn at Scawton - 10 minutes away from Helmsley. In some ways I prefer it to the Hare as it's not as complex in terms of flavours, but uses very high quality ingredients on a lovely designed simple menu. Be sure to try the twice baked cheese soufflé if you go. You WILL need to book though.

In terms of things to do...In this weather - it is snowing now - with a pregnant wife it's a toughy. I'd get her ensconced in the Spa at the Fev for most of the day. Keep her out of the myriad women's clothes shops in the square as they'll have your eyes out.

It's only 45 min run so we are up there quite frequently. I do worry about taking up invitations from someone called "Slightly Brown" with a picture of a gerbil in a tube on his profile though... hehe

Strangely Brown - It's a Black Adder reference. If you do come over again give us a shout and I'll buy you a pint for sorting out the cycling tops.

I have no defence for the Gerbil biggrin

Sutton Bank. If its clear, spectacular views, and if its dry, drop down from the gliding club and walk through the forest below and watch the gliders taking off above you.
Afterwards head back towards Kirkbymoorside and stop at Wombleton and get a meal at the plough Inn.Another vote also for Dalby Forest as well, however it costs £7.00 to get in. Parking is free though, and at the visitor centre you can get a decent snack for a reasonable sum!!

Pots and kettles sir! haha

thanks for the advice, I shall be looking into covering a couple of them at least, I'm looking for somewhere with a real traditional old english (but very fancy) feel too to spend a couple of nights.
