Folks,

Just been accepted to study a PGCE at Sheffield Uni in September.
During the course I'll have blocks of lectures 9-5 (a few weeks at a time) on campus at Glossop Road (close to Weston Park.) I'll be working in schools the rest of the time and will have free parking at each.

I'm wondering if anyone has local knowledge of free (safe + no restrictions) parking within 15 minutes or less walk of Weston Park where I could leave my car all day? I don't mind getting into town early if spaces are limited as you have to for the free spots near Leeds city centre for example.

I'd only be commuting to the uni (from Leeds) for a few weeks out of the year, so monthly tram/train tickets seem a bit pointless.

Would it be worth finding a student friend with their own parking in student land, or is there a viable place to sneak a small car near town?

All the residential streets around that area are as far as i'm aware permit only or very short stay.

Parking is a nightmare in that area.

Hmm.
How do people who commute from outside Sheffield do it?
Park and Ride? Tram? Train? Pay to park?

As said, parking around there is a bit of a nightmare at the best of times.

The only streets I know where parking is up to 10 hours are Hounsfield Rd/Leavygreave Rd but I'd imagine you'll need to be there early to get a space. Other than that, it's pay and display in town unfortunately.

Maybe this isn't as easy as I thought.
Just checked and it seems Leavygreave is Pay and Display now too.

I would use the P&R at Meadowhall, then Supertram in to the University stop. Failing that you can get a 'Cat. C' University permit which allows you to park in the University Pay & Displays (can be variable space-wise depending on the time of day) which are reasonably priced. You would be eligible for 'Cat. B' but that would be quite expensive for the timings of the PGCE course. Once you are registered you can apply for the permit through your IT account.

Thanks for the info.
Some great, detailed knowledge on here!
I'm looking at driving to either Meadowhall P&R or the end of the tram line near Junction 36 then.
Student discounts on tram tickets as well smile

Just do Meadowhall. The P&R in Hillsborough would be a nightmare to get to from the M1 at the times you are likely to need it.

APCOA on Eyre Street is a nice multi-storey in the city centre and if you ring the bell on the security office and get your token validated it costs £3.80 a day. So far not had any dings in the car unlike the nearby Q-park which is full of twonks who don't give a st if they scrape your car (and it costs upwards of £14 a day).

Hi Ben - I remember we talked about this before, I guess you got on the course so well done.

For this location, and coming down M1 anyway, definitely do the Tram from meadow hall I reckon. It's easy, straight off the motorway, loads of parking etc. And the tram is quite quick and not too dear either.

Wise advice. Don't even consider J36 to Hillsborough.

Thanks everyone.
Tram from Meadowhall sounds like the best bet.
That multi-storey sounds good though and cheaper for a day than an hour at the Light in Leeds!
