Speed camera vans x3 now ....
Discussion

With lots of data to show(?) that one van has led to a reduction in accident/deaths already.
Silver transits - rear & FRONT facing cameras - website does show locations & I sometimes pick up from the York Press website info about where they will be deployed in the coming week. Not surprisingly they do pretty well on the A63 near the Squires cafe.
You can even get an excel spreadsheet soon!

"The force has recorded a 50% reduction in speed related fatal collisions during 2011, from 14 in 2010 to 7 in 2011.".
Doesn't say if these are at site where the mobile was being deployed a the time.
" Despite the continuous enforcement, education and engagement operations carried out by North Yorkshire Police and the "95 Alive" York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership, casualty data revealed that excessive or inappropriate speed was responsible for 24% of all road deaths in North Yorkshire over the three years to 2010."
So they are lumping together people who responsible for road deaths whether they were speeding or not, but then go on to talking about speeding only.

One of the three silver vans was on the old A1 today. Parked up by the turn off for Fairburn Ings. Saw it about 11am on my way to Squires.
Yep, I saw the same van (A1246 Great North Road Fairburn)They have also been placing one on the same road further south where the old A1 goes from single to double carriageway. I very nearly got caught by that one!
I think its good that they are publishing all the captured data online from the 23rd april onwards. You can actually see how many people are speeding and by how much. You can also check to see if you have been caught
if you remember what time you went past.North Yorkshire Police said:
The safety camera vans will be self-funding with £35 of the £93 speed awareness course being used to fund the running costs. Any excess cash after the running costs have been deducted will be ring-fenced to fund future road safety projects which will be identified by the "95 Alive" York and North Yorkshire Road Safety Partnership.
Cant help but think they are going to make a LOT of money from this. Edited by BenGismo on Wednesday 1st May 19:25

Can't believe they've caught and fined over 26,000 drivers in less than two years !!!!
Whats really stunning is that 22,000 of those caught got the speed awareness course as a result!! If each of those speed awareness courses costs £93 (as NYP say), then they have taken in £2,031,492
(Yes 2 million £) in revenue on the speed awareness courses alone over that period!!That doesnt even include all the money paid in court or on fixed penalties!

It's a f
king joke really
Ok, Ok, i'm aware there'll be those who say you shouldn't be speeding at all, but they are setting up in some bloody snide places these days and catching people entering speed limit change areas. Gone are the days of high visibility warnings it seems.
My missus has been done twice this year 38 & 34 (one FPN and offered one SAC) in a 30 as she entered the 30 from a 40 zone (she didn't even see the van on either occasion).
Saturday gone there was one on York ring road nr Hopgrove, one between Hopgrove and Monks Cross (possibly poking his camera into the 40mph bit from a layby a few hundred yards down into the 60mph bit, at a junction where you've usually got to clog on to get out of as well).
Yesterday there was one on the A64 nr Tad, and another outside the village shop in Stockton on Forest, both on my way home. The missus went to the shops as i got in and said there was one on the Hopgrove to Monks Cross stretch again as well.
I 'could' have been had by all of those listed above so twitchy pants for me for a while now
The lad who lives over from me works for the Police servicing their vehicles and tells me the van's cameras have a 1km range on them. Ironically, his missus was also caught by one of them in our village
They are out in force in a localised area everyday, and not in accident hot spots. It's just not cricket!!

SAC = Speed awareness course (See http://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/4193 )
One of 4 ways is used to deal with a speeder:
RFS - High end offender who will be summonsed directly to court. (Reffered for summons)
Cond Offer - A violation that can be dealt with by way of a £60 fixed fine and 3 penalty points. Also called FPN - fixed penalty notice
SAC - A violation that can be dealt with by the attendance at a speed awareness education course.
NPW - Not proceeded with.
Thy do tell us at least some of the locations where they will be placing the vans beforehand. Click on your location here:
http://www.northyorkshire.police.uk/10951
Worth checking this regularly.

One in action today at Stillingfleet near the old pit entrance - rear doors towards the hill. I must say this is a real high risk area which lacks clear lines of sight & has so much potential for unexpected intrusion into the road.
It`s a Weds evening so more bikers on the way to The Squires at Sherburn in Elmet = Easy Money.

This is one of the reasons I packed in biking. Used to frequent that very road but it's at the point now where 50% of your concentration is focused on looking out for the law, takes the fun out of it. It`s a Weds evening so more bikers on the way to The Squires at Sherburn in Elmet = Easy Money.

If I go anywhere near Squires I always ride legal and do all the Roadcraft stuff to minimise any bother. If the vans are there for plumping up the coffers, I know they're not elsewhere in the county

Looking at the NYP figures (8th April to 21st April)
During that time 1458 motorists were caught speeding
1308 (90%) were given SAC (£93 course)
135 (9%) got fixed penalty (£60 + 3 points)
15 (1%) are going to court
A total revenue of £130,000 was generated outside of court just in this 2 week period.

The worst part is...
On the 12th april on the B6163 Thistle Hill, Knaresborough, 62 people were caught in 1hour!!!
They made £104 for every MINUTE they had the camera van at that location.
NYP....ROBBING US BLIND!!!
EDIT: I forgot to ask.....
What's the best way of warning other motorcyclists/drivers that there is a police van ahead of them. I tried the slow down wave (Flat palm up and down) the other day, but is there a better way???

^And your problem is?
I would have thought it was obvious but just for you....My problem is that this is about making money and not safety. Catching people doing 34 in a 30 is not about safety. They dont even bother stopping the driver, they just issue the fine.gretsch drummer said:
If you want to speed, prepare to get caught and fined.
I have zero points and intend to keep it that way. I know where I can speed and I am prepared thanks.gretsch drummer said:
And why warn others of their stupidity? Let them take the rap for their actions.
So you saying I should not encourage speeders to slow down to the speed limit and be safer? Your saying its better if they drive too fast then try to emergency brake when they do see a van?? Your also saying that you wouldn't do a good deed for another motorist that is in the interest of their safety? You might be on the wrong forum
