I've had a daft idea to just grab the tent and sleeping bags and take junior off somewhere in Norht Yorks (anywhere around Dacre or Fewston or THruscross etc).

Anyone suggest any campsites where we can just turn up, park the car and pitch a tent?

Very few places is the easy answer! I wanted to do this ages ago - got nowhere.

For an official site you can't go wrong with Masons at Appletreewick. Great location on banks of the wharf. Half hour walk to Burnsall. 5 minute walk to my local (The Craven Arms, Appletreewick).

Worth a look.

Yep this is a good shout if I'm honest, we just turned up and it was fine albeit a deposit was needed and it's not like we carried £90 cash or what ever it was for a deposit, which meant to we had to be silent by 9pm or something..

We got lucky with the weather and drank and swam in the river most the weekend!

Cheers both.

Will check that one out and the one near Dacre. £15 a night can't really go wrong.

Have tent, sleeping bags, disposable BBQ and some meat.

Could be a bit of a larf with junior!

Definitely go with one at Appletreewick if you can as you have the river to splash about in and a good pub. It is also a bit further into the nice countryside than Dacre.

Might try that myself with Gabby and Max next month so let me know how it goes John smile

Does this mean you drank the river or drank in the river. Ambiguous!

Stopped at Mason's many times when I was a youngster and my sister took her bunch up there last week. Highly recommended!!!

Last 3 times I went, back to the dales (spent 3 years living in Long preston - almost on the lancs border), I camped - 2 miles north of settle, so I could eat at the brilliant cuury house (bring your own beer ... no licence), Malham, near the cove....stty bogs but great for 6am climbing.. and Janets Foss- or rather Goredale scar. I skinny dipped in janets foss back in the early 80's with a girl from Marple. (whilst wking my way up the pennine way as 16 year olds tend to do)
